So how does everyone feel about AI, specifically being used to create content for the game that may be shared here at the Rancor Pit?

I admit I am not that experienced with it. This year I've tried the free web version of ChatGPT a few times to ask it some really esoteric WEG Star Wars questions, some of which it answered incorrectly, but I was able to point out the errors and it acknowledged them. I've also used Google's AI to look up some alien fluff facts; one time I asked it to organize the info a chart which I saved.

I've never shared any of the AI-generated text here, but I have noticed that AI sometimes uses the Rancor Pit as a source for various Star Wars info. Probably a lot of the web spiders here are being sent by AI to scan the Pit. I've blocked some of them but they are just everywhere, like the thousands of microscopic arachnids that live on each of our faces.

There are certainly pitfalls in using AI generated content. My view, its a tool, if people want to use it in creating content, even if wrong or mechanically incorrect, there is typically something to salvage. I understand a lot of the mad hate for AI, but its here and we need to accept that. My suggestion is to allow it. As an aside, sometimes, AI gets a good idea, YMMV.

I see AI as a support tool. It is not a creator. And since you need to double check it, it should never take the lead as an information source. The technology simply isn't there yet. Now, if you created your own for your purposes, that's also a great approach. For example, I could create a LLM around all the D6 material and feed it all the books, novels, etc that I can find and make a resource for myself. Even then, it's still just another resource. I don't think it should replace skilled workers like artists for paid materials. Fan material I'm okay with because it's a passion project and free. It someone argues about that art, they can contribute to replace it. But if it makes to a market, even as free, it should be people that get paid for it.

AI needs to be kept on a short leash. AI is a tool and tools can be used for good or evil. Tools also need responsible users who have gained expertise in its use. In some places AI is a very powerful search tool that can save hours of time executing complex search parameters.

However I asked AI to filter for sources prior to "The Phantom Menace" and sources prior to the birth of the RPG (pre 1987 sources). AI fell on its face including tons of newer sources I knew as an expert. When scolded, the AI apologised and still could not give me the sources the later references came from. AI is an abysmal chronological filter. Human filtering by time is still a unique super power we possess as compared to the machine.

Conversely I gave Gemini a few of Mike Vilardi's artworks and commanded the AI to convert to photorealism. After a few corrective prompts:

- Vigo Kreet'ah
- Houk

I am only sharing these with you as a demonstration and I will unlink these in a few days as they are for private personal campaign use only and abuse of Vilardi's work is not my intent. AI is a subject very important to discuss, and I am showing you in the spirit of fair use.

Organic artwork is one thing. If you ask AI to render a 1977 Chevrolet Camaro, it will combine multiple years (of which I can spot instantly as a mechanic) and form a composite broken time machine camaro that will have emblems, trim, bumpers, and tail lights from 1967-1981. All AI automobiles are essentially chimera and conspicuous slop.

"If you didn't take the time to write it, why should I take the time to read it?"

Broken record time: This community produces way too much human-made slop of its own that will never see refinement and balancing through the medium of play testing because of multiple reasons. I am one GM and can only playtest so much in my campaign. Like the cost of skills in this game, AI is like power creep and it will burry us all if not used with responsibility and discernment.

That's pathetic. You'd think that chronology would be the one thing AI could right. That's so disappointing.

I'm also still very disgruntled that spellcheck isn't better by now. I'm often only one letter off (and the off-letter is an adjacent key to the correct letter), and it still has no idea what I mean.

I wish that I had a short leash on me before clicking on that link. That Vigo image is nightmare material. I'm not sure that species has ever been used in my game.

I may someday use AI to help me visually realize some species I have created for this game, but I'll be happy with it being in the style of WEG Star Wars RPG art. I have a really good imagination so I don't feel like I need photorealism in that art.

I've noticed this about cars and almost any subject of AI art.

I would agree that some content is more valuable than others, but we never know what content here may be useful and beneficial to random GMs in the world. Stuff can serve as inspiration for something that gets tweaked to work better. I suspect that a lot of material here gets playtested without the results being reported back to us.

And thanks for being one of the non-slop content creators.
