Mom's been back from the 2nd surgery for her belly (this time a lateral abcess, vice medial last time), but now the concern is her swelling feet. Got to see a doc the other day, who's gonna refer her to a cardiologist, thinking there may be something circulation issues causing it... _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

i can't recall if i'd mentioned this or not; i have poor circulation in my legs, the veins in my right leg are a convoluted mess. As a consequence of this i need to have my legs elevated so they are higher than my heart when i sleep.
Whenever i am sitting, i have to have my legs elevated as possible, usually higher than my waist is best.
Failing to do so (either one) contributes directly to the swelling of my legs. At the very least you should discuss these options with your mother & her doctors.
i hope this helps.
On my end, my father is having a surgery tomorrow to pin his enlarged prostrate into a position that won't cause him pain.
It should be a simple in & out procedure.
Mom is driving him there & back & staying with him for the 12 hrs following to monitor & assist him.
He won't be able to do any lifting for two weeks, which will be very difficult for him.
Western NY is high winds warning this evening, gusts to 60 mph, & my friends in Tonawanda already had an outage, which lasted about an hour.
just wanted to get this out before i lose power.
i hope everyone will be safe & well.
Take care & God bless! _________________ Facing all that you fear will free you from yourself.

She does the putting her feet up, but due to the swelling (mostly her left foot) it often goes numb in an hour or two.. so she has to put them down to get the circulation going.. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Had a scan for my mom's legs (Finally). She's got two clots in the left anckle/calf, in the veins, and a clogged artery up in her thigh... BOOOOOO! _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Figured i'd use this already existing medical thread, to do an update on my mom. Its been several years since her leg amputation, and issues with her belly, but she got rushed to the hospital earlier on. Water in the lungs, massive mastetic growth in the chest, possible clot in the lungs (or heart, they're still awaiting the ct scans to confirm which).
All in all not looking good for her..
Being her primary POC, i put down for her to have a DNR... _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Condolences, garkhal. This reminds me of what happened with my mother. Was away at grad school in 97, and when I came back for Thanksgiving, I learned that she had an operation to drain fluid from her lungs. Turned out she had cancer in the membranes surrounding the lungs. Surgery was eliminated since the scar tissues could contain cancer cells that would spread. So they chose chemo over radiation. Still continued driving to Philly to teach at the same school she attended. But the next summer, she had a heart attack. She was released and was weak, but she tried to push herself to recover enough to go to work as usual in the fall. She was unrealistic. Traveling up or down a flight of stairs consisting 13 steps tired her out. How could she have recovered enough to drive 10 miles, stand in front of kids for about 8 hours, then drive 10 miles back, and do this five times a week? She pushed herself too hard and had another attack. Back in the hospital, but this time, she didn't come out.
Be there for her man. My dad told me what was going on, and offered to take me to see her. I chose not to since I didn't think I could stand the sight. She died a week later. One of the worst regrets of my life. |

Well, got off the phone with her doc treating her.. Her brain had been deprived of oxygen for over 10 minutes according to him.
Also a tumor she had in her breast (that has some how gone un-diagnosed, even with all the chest/stomach scans she had the other year), metasticized into her lungs, water ON the lungs, cysts that popped both internally into her blood and several externally popped..
The call was made to take her off life support..
I was dreading this day coming, after she left hospital after her Leg amputation, as the docs said unless something changes in her lifestyle, mobility etc, the clots likely would do her in, within 4-5 years..
BUT even "preparing" for it, still doesn't lessen the hammer i felt when i was on the phone... _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

I had to make the call to take my dad off of life support this week two years ago, but his wishes were DNR and they did anyway because they somehow didn't know about the DNR, so I told them to let him go because he knew I would be called and that's what he wanted.
But you lived with and cared for your mom. And here it is, right before mother's day. I'm so very sorry for your loss. Take care in the weeks to come. _________________ *

I've made peace with it.. The docs, after her leg got taken off, didn't give her that many years left, what with the clots and shanked up circulatory system. So she had her lifes worth...
But thanks to all for the kind words.. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Condolences, Garhkal, it's never easy to suffer the loss of a parent no matter how much you think you're prepared for it. A DNR is a hard call to make, but as someone working in the emergency medical field, I can assure you that deciding to do so in advance was the best thing you could do. So often, I see families that aren't in an emotional state to let a loved one go have to make that decision in the moment. _________________ We're fine, we're all fine here now, thank you.
