Good call to add Initiative to 1e. I do DEX+PER-1D, so both DEX and PER are factors.

I like this. Maybe add a twist and do Mech+Dex-1D for vehicle and starship combat?

I think that is reasonable. I've also heard others suggest MEC+PER for vehicle/spaceship combat since PER is the RAW component of all initiative.

Personally I don't bother adding MEC because of inherent attribute overlap. Doing things before others in vehicles still involves manual reaction time and awareness, so DEX+PER is not inappropriate. I've found that initiative tends to matter less in vehicle/space chases/combat, so MEC skills make the biggest difference anyway.

Actually, I mis-typed. I had intended to say Mech + Per - 1D. Oh well.

I see it as two separate applications of the same reflexes: one to use hand-held objects (or hands), the other to make the proper control motions on a vehicle. I see Initiative having increased importance in my larger starship combat system, so I expect I'll hang onto it.
