No problem. It looks like a fair way to grant such a request, and it's done in such a way so as to keep the players from succumbing to the desire to run around getting into battle after battle with no thought of the consequences. That way you AND they know that if they're in a battle, they NEED to be in that battle or they couldn't avoid it at all, and that will help make them more responsible players.

I also wouldn't allow it. The Pilot can spend CP for the dodge roll, Force users can spend CP if they use a force power that could help them in that case, but thats it.

If I would allow it at all, then CP would have to be spend on scale, meaning that for a Starship that has a scale of 4D (if I remember right) you would need 4 CP for 1D for the Hull... but I still don't see a reason why to allow it at all.

I don't allow spending CPs to following rolls:
- hull and shield code
- blaster/lightsaber and other not STR based damage
- rolls that use it's own skill values (e.g. homing missiles that have a fixed missile weapons code)

With bonus damage rule (good attack roll makes more damage) it works well, because even unsuccessful defense roll may reduce damage.

I allow CPs to be spent on hull soak. According to the RAW, they can be spent to boost damage. The only reason I can think of for this damage boost is shot placement; I can't believe the CPs make blaster bolts larger or something. If CP can be spent on damage to make shot placement more lethal, it stands to reason they could be spent on hull soak to make the shot placement less lethal.

I take a middle path and allow characters to transfer CP to the ship between missions. In essence, rather than training to improve skills, the character spends time tinkering, repairing and cleaning his ship: loving it, as described in the Malcolm Reynolds quote above. The in game effect is to give the ship it's own CP pool which can then be spent on things like Hull rolls.

Great idea. It would also work great with blasters and other weapons.

Good ideas here! I haven't allowed it in the past, but I think I'll propose this to my group! Smile

This is my vote as well. CPs are for the character only, not inanimate objects they use. They want to avoid starship destruction? Become better pilots and use their CP to avoid the shot. Once a turbolsaser hits, it's beyond their ability to control- as, realistically, it ought to be.

That said, I really like crmcneill's idea. I will probably implement this myself.

We liked this enough to do a variant on it:

Hull Rolls
Any involved pilots may use their own Character Points to affect their craft’s Hull roll, but only for defensive uses and maneuvers.

That would really make it hard to ever destroy a large ship (large crew) as they could all use CP to affect the hull.

True, but even on the capital ship they're on (a modified Loronar Medium Transport), there's only two pilots (at most); a pilot and co-pilot.

I don't expect to run PCs on a larger ship anytime soon, though your point is still a good one (might want to word it so that only one can do so per round or something).

To curb any potential for abuse, I've reworded things to account for what garhkal pointed out: that more than once character could be piloting at a time. Thus I've amended it to read:

Character Points
Any involved pilots may use their own Character Points to affect their craft’s Hull roll, but only for defensive uses and maneuvers, and only one character may do so per round.

And how many people are 'pilots' say on a victory star destroyer? A carrack? A lancer?

So then the gunners add cp to their damage rolls and it becomes a wash. I personally wouldn't allow it on capital scale ships. For PCs I'd allow it in certain circumstances in Starfighter scale ships.
