Isn't there a rule in the starship damage table for characters onboard the starship taking damage when the starship takes damage?

Could that rule be adapted/extrapolated for this sort of situation?

Thats land based vehicles.. If on a ship and it goes boom, you die.
Untrue. Not according to the RAW. The rules I quoted are for Passenger Damage for starships they come from Chapter 7 Space Travel and Combat page 129. If the ship goes boom you take 12D character scale damage. Depending on your STR and the rolls, you may or may not die.

Agreed. Generally, I think most people on a ship that goes boom die because they're in space without a ship. That is, if the boom 12D doesn't kill them outright.

The RAW uses the same table for both vehicles and starships, though the table is listed separately in each section, vehicles on p. 112, starships on p. 129. Smile

True. Unless they are rescued quite promptly, are wearing a suit or in a survival bubble, or are a species that can survive vacuum, like the Givin. Space is not a friendly environment.

Even if in a space suit, how would the suit stay "Vacumm sealed" in that big of an explosion?

Depends how bit the explosion is. Is the ship vaporized, or does it break up into several large chunks? The ImpSB write-up on the Carrack Light Cruiser states that their compartmentalized interior allows crew to survive the ship's destruction in combat.

From a realistic perspective you have a point and obviously it depends on (A) type of suit e.g. armored, self sealing (I assume most suits can seal minor punctures and tears), etc, (B) how well they roll their soak vs. damage e.g. if the character is unwounded, why would the suit be destroyed, (C) how much you, the GM, want to kill the PCs - after a player survives 12D damage it is a bit anti-climactic for the character to then die because their suit is punctured. As a player, it would feel similar to the GM telling me "rocks fall on your character from the roof of the cave and you die."

If a ship destroyed result = all characters automatically die that makes ship combat far, far deadlier than any other combat and while it may be more "realistic" whatever that means in a space opera game, it doesn't sound very fun. And if that is how you intend to treat it, why even bother having the player roll. Just say: "your character dies (again), would you like to create a new character?"

It also seemed like Anakin, OBi, R2, and Palps rode a breaking up / destroyed ship down to to the surface of Corsucant. They seemed fine.

Ah, perhaps said ship doesn't entirely go boom... only a section goes boom (one the players aren't in, preferably...)

Then it already has serious problems...

I came up with the idea awhile ago, of a PC carrying an ascension gun so that if he/she had to eject or otherwise leave the ship, they could catch a ride on a passing ship (assuming some stretchiness in the cable) and reel themselves in. Snatch life from the Jaws of Death.

No, that was normal operation. (It's a CIS ship.)Laughing

That is a good point, in Star Wars, vehicles tend to go fast and blow up big. Buildings don't. I could see them dealing significantly less damage when they are destroyed than a landspeeder or a light freighter.

Getting back to topic, I think the sliding scale from jmanski seems fine. You can use running to determine how the character is trapped (like in an alcove with enough air for breathing or with a large boulder crippling your legs and air for 3 hours or with good running/jumping the pc can get out of trouble through a window) and the dodge roll determines the damage on your way (eg: on your way out to safety some debris hits the pc but he stumbles out of the building)

How far do ascention guns go? And i am having a hard time seeing a ship letting you pull yourself along..
