I dunno... I mean, whether it's big or small, it's still conveying an intent of harm. I think any of us would get a little nervous if someone pulled a Derringer on us, for example. That's worth a bonus Wink

Speaking as someone who has had a gun put in his face, and a shotgun pointed at his gut... It REEEAAAALLLLY doesn't matter about the size of the gun. What matters is the intent (or percieved intent).

The guy w/ the gun was robbing me - I had NO doubt he'd pull the trigger (it was a .32 pistol). Yeah, I gave him the cash.

The girl w/ the shotgun was an ex who thought I was cheating on her. A little distraught, but there was no way she was serious.

So, yeah... this is one case where size doesn't matter...

The difference is the universe. In this world a derringer would frighten me. Gunshots are often fatal. If you're trying to threaten an amoured Esoomian (7D max strength) with a 2D holdout pistol then perhaps the threat would be treated with contempt.

Most people aren't armoured, nor Esoomians, and a 2D blaster is still going to inflict some serious pain to a 2D Str person. Doesn't have to be fatal to be effective.

Of course, if you argue with extreme cases all the time, yeah, something like a holdout blaster is just laughable. But of you look at more general cases, not so much.

Good point modiers are often situational.

A standard blaster vs a standard NPC should then give a bonus

Right. PCs are exceptional individuals... most NPCs are not. Even many PCs certainly aren't immune to the effects of a low powered hold-out blaster; combat oriented PCs, yeah, it'd be nothing, but other build types it'd be a bit more serious.

in my bountyhunter campaign i usually allowed intimidation to be used with out MAPs. the player would say what they were doing then i would apply situational bonuses and we would roll. in most situations so far i haven't felt that using the intimidation skill called for MAPs. but that's just me.

sometimes you just have to take the Cinematic approach. throw the rules out the window and make a good memorable scene for the players. Thats what makes MAP's so difficult to put a set of rules to. More like a good set of guidelines really.

See, I tend to keep the MAPs and reduce difficulties, add strong bonus modifiers or ignore the roll result altogether for the cinematic approach. May as well be consistent in the application of MAPs.
