In all fairness Whill I resurrected this thread.
I have in the past got the sense that I was treated unfairly or falsely accused when trying to present factual data to a discussion or attempting to ask questions to better understand the justification for certain policies on the wiki and other social media venues.
I would argue the temperatures are elevated in our modern culture. There’s a lot of uncertainties going on in the world right now and that tends to amplify tribalism. I need not remind this esteemed body we are a tribe. Families don’t always get along, but we are a family and I call for us to behave like siblings.
The Star Wars design alliance, discord, actually graded fairly high when I asked for their definition of “hatred“. I received what accounted to about a page plus of definition with very specific descriptions.
I know you’re very passionate about this subject, which of course, is the main motivator for the creation of this thread. There are however, multiple definitions and perspectives on this subject. Not everyone places as much priority on this topic as others, and you have the unfortunate duty as webmaster of this forum to balance under enforcement to the other end of the spectrum, witch hunts.
I see a lot of misunderstanding over the past dozen or so posts. I recommend we start over, we are rational adults, and we can get along and share ideas. _________________ Star Wars Deckplans Alliance

Whill! I wanted to thank you for this "The Rancor Pit actively condemns hatred" thread. You're making sense and the fact that you defended the (right and just) position so emphatically is a testament to your sound moral compass.
Systemic racism and institutional discrimination are very real. We must fight them and their many proponents when we can. As well as aid already marginalized groups when we can.
In my time away from the Pit, I missed this thread when it was newly posted, but I can attest to having seen people post bigoted comments in other Star Wars spaces online, including blatant threats, but also including subtler statements which use deceptive language and semantics to convey prejudiced views.
Re: the latter, it's not unlike so-called "right to work" laws, which are actually anti-worker, but use language that purports to support "freedom" while actually supporting actions and policy that limit, undermine, or outright remove workers’ freedoms, rights, and legal protections.
And in my experience, it's far FAR more likely for actual bigoted commentary and content to be given a pass by powers that be, than it is for things to be labeled hate-speech erroneously. For example, at my current work in TV, and in my labor organizing, and even at my previous job as a paralegal focused on advertising law and statute violations, I regularly came across anti-Immigrant, anti-Muslim, and anti-Trans commercial spots which have aired despite actively encouraging harm against their target groups, despite the vast majority of our staff objecting to the content, and despite the resulting negative feedback from viewers/callers. This includes advertising supporting the blatantly bigoted and long debunked “Great Replacement theory.” Those things were not labeled hate-speech, when they could and should have been.
In any case, it's obvious to me what you were saying, Whill. And anyone who is concerned about actual real-life justice in a world where there is often precious little of it, can see and understand what you mean as well.
You are a stand-up individual, sir. Many thanks for the many things you do for the community, and for being a good man.
Thankfully, I personally have encountered only one or two comments which showed overt prejudice on the Pit — one of which was regarding the "newsmedia circus about so-called inclusiveness" and "unhealthy and dangerous messages about sex" that pansexuality and Lando supposedly present in Solo.
Whill, you nipped the above line of commentary in the bud, before it could potentially turn into a full-blown anti-Queer argument. And you did so in a tactful but firm manner, so once again kudos to you on your stewardship! |
