I had a character decide to bet on the pod races while waiting for the other characters to take care of some business on Malastare.
While there are as many ways to handle this as there are GMs, I came up with this on the fly as a quick and easy mechanic. Looking to share it/ bounce it off the walls.
I deduced that the typical Pod racer that the character bets on has 10D as a chance to win.
This is for a basic pay out. Bet 100cr will win 100cr.
He could choose to bet on an underdog. For each 1D he subtracted from his chosen racer, the pay out goes up by a factor.
ie if he bets on the 9D racer, then 100cr will win 200 cr.
ie if he bets on the 8D racer, then 100cr will win 400 cr.
ie if he bets on the 7D racer, then 100cr will win 800 cr.
ie if he bets on the 6D racer, then 100cr will win 1,600 cr.
ie if he bets on the 5D racer, then 100cr will win 3,200 cr.
ie if he bets on the 4D racer, then 100cr will win 6,400 cr.
ie if he bets on the 3D racer, then 100cr will win 12,800 cr.
For the race, he rolls his racer.
I roll 10D6 for the other racers. Highest roll wins.
Also another player who bets would get the same opportunity if he chooses a different racer.
Thus Player A might be rolling 10D6 while a risk-taker player might be rolling 6D6 against him, while the GM still rolls the 10D6 to account for all other participants.
Additionally, he asked if his gambling skill could be used. I allowed him to roll it to see if he knows anything about the performance of the pods involved and the competence of the racers etc.
For every 10 on his roll he got a bonus die on the race roll. |
