Having slept on it, I think it would be better to just allow this rule with fixed forward weaponry.

Just a thought, but what if instead of a bonus based on the difference vs. the difficulty, the pilot could use some of his piloting skill dice as gunnery dice. That would reduce his piloting skill (he is focusing on the shot), and still provide a gunnery bonus (the extra dice), but would use easier math. It would also make the bonus more skill based than luck based. So that way the PCs don't get fired if the GM gets the hot hand with the wild die when rolling for a mook.

We could limit how many dice the pilot could transfer. Maybe 1/3rd of his skill? Or 1/5th?

In the past on the rare times i USED die pooling, i always capped it at what ever D OVER the attribute their skill was.. So a bounty hunter (4d dex) who had 8d blaster could only pool 4d from his blaster skill to add to his damage.

Maybe combine the two ideas and only allow him to dice pool based on how well his Piloting roll beat the terrain?

How so? If he has rolled his skill, he has nothing left to use to 'pool' for his gunnery roll?

Well, he could set the dice aside from his piloting skill before making the piloting roll, and only get the bonus if he makes it.

That's how the pooling works as is. You sacrifice from the to hit side, in the hope if you do hit your damage is increased.
