Agreed. But the guy i am asking about is the antagonist for a mission in which the pcs are going after him... So would that change anything? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

I, personally, would still shy away from auto-kill, as I do not like the idea of PC or NPC having that. For an NPC to be quite that dangerous, it is usually someone I intend to have around for a long time, like the main adversary, or the primary antagonist for a mini-campaign. As long as you keep in mind that, even in complete darkness, when he is out in the open, in line of sight of the characters, even with a high stealth roll, he should not be considered "hidden" as he is not invisible. So, after striking, to remain hidden, he would have to find cover again, or be completely unheard/unseen to begin with. Give the player fair chances to spot and counter attack, or at least withdraw if they are no match for him. _________________ "There's a set way to gain new Force Points and it represents a very nice system, where you're rewarded for heroism, not for being a poor conductor to electricity." ~Jachra |

Resurrecting this one just for the initial aspects of this thread (not the whole assassin being hunted part of it me and Kage ryu got into).
When you have ambushes happen (opponents beat the enemy's search with their sneak) do YOU have it where its an Undogable/parryable attack? Is it one round of attacks? The target(s) can still parry but at a significant penalty?
This is more to our new folk.. But the oldsters can chime in if they didn't before. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

When a stormtrooper squad successfully suprises a PC party, or the PCs successfully surprise someone else, I allow two actions (two "segments" of free action) for the hidden side. Then I call for Initiative (for anyone who survives that round!) and conduct the rest of the encouner as per normal. |

I just did this in our last session. I did it straight per the RAW (even looked it up right there and went step-by-step).
A pack of nighthunters (invisible, even to Force users) made their Sneak rolls, and so got one free attack (one action) on the PCs before they got a chance to do anything (they couldn't even Parry or Dodge). But it was only that single attack action. _________________ Currently Running: Villains & Vigilantes (a 32-year-old campaign with multiple groups) and D6 Star Wars; mostly on hiatus are Adventures in Middle-earth and Delta Green |

Surprise: R&E p.96, "The surprised side cannot roll defensive skills to dodge or parry this first action."
Reaction Skills: R&E [.78, "When a character gets attacked, he can react by trying to get out of the way. A character can wait until he's attacked to use a reaction skill. The character can use up any remaining actions for a reaction or have the reaction be an extra action, accepting the multiple action penalty for the rest of the round."
Reactive Dodge: R&E p.90, "When using a reaction skill, the character makes the skill roll. The roll is the attacker's new difficulty number. (This is difficulty number is in effect for all attacks of that type made against the character for the rest of the round.)"
Full Dodge: R&E p.90, "A character can make a "full reaction." A full reaction can be the only action the character makes in the entire round." _________________ Don Diestler

How has your players responded to it being 2 free actions (no parry/dodge possible) for a surprise attack? Do they love it or hate it? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Well, so far it's always been the PCs doing the ambushing (lol)! So they love it of course!
But I just now realized that I may have described it a little inaccurately. My campaign's surprise rule is that there is two free actions (that's it) before the surprised party gets Initiative and can start to react. Not two free actions from every surprising person. Just two free shots. |

So if 7 people surprised a 10 mans quad of imperials only 2 get to shoot?
Strange.
Just thought of a Linked "should they get to dodge" question.
Lets say big bad Boss man has set a bomb trap for the pc's. They see it though and try to disarm it, but the one disarming it, flubs so bad it sets it off right there and then.
Do you give HIM a dodge? What of the others (assuming they stood around)?
What if it was not a bomb they tried to diffuse, but some other 'trap' they just sprung (like a repulsor floor mat that kicks you skyward 20 feet)? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |
