If Life Detection is a power than I don't really want it to be a D&D style Detect Life (which is what it seems to be in the RAW). I want something where the Jedi is coming in to a planet, area, or ship and she can sense (i.e. roll to try to sense) how much life is there. Something like, "that swamp is teaming with life" or "the planet is dead, there is absolutely nothing living there" - cue eerie music or "I get a faint sense of something alive on that ship, but I can't tell who or what it is." Sort of a combination between useful information and semi-useful atmospheric information. |

For that application Bren, Sense Force can be used. Sense Force gives the target a sense of the general state of the force in a particular area. An area teeming with a balanced ecosystem could be reflected as the light. An area devoid of all life may cause an uneasy feeling, causing suspicion, hence Dark.
Just a suggestion though. |

That's a good suggestion. Have sometimes used that. I may just be grousing, but it seems like Sense Force - which is used to pick up the dark aura of the scary tree cave on Dagobah - should be for sensing force, Life Detection should be for detecting life in general or in groups, and Life Sense (though this may not be the bestest name) should be for picking up more detailed information by individual. But as I said, I may just be grousing. Perhaps if I feel inspired I will look at "fixing" that for myself. |

I'd like to hear what you come up with for a fix. The way some of the powers are named, it makes them either too narrow or too broad. I agree that being able to sense a large concentration of life is definitely within the Jedi's scope.
One could also consider removing the specialization requirements of Life Web, and just make it so that the Jedi must declare what species of life he's searching for, or if he's just looking for a general sense of how densely populated an area, planet or whatever is. Then he could get a strong sense of life from the planet or whatever area he's sensing. |
