The Emperor could have had an amazing scene with Anakin where he reveals everything he had done, from creating Anakin with or without Plagius

With or without Plagueis? If Palpatine had told Vader that story, I'm sure he would have taken full credit for Anakin's generation. In the Darth Plagueis novel, Palpatine and Plagueis together concentrated on manipulating the Force itself to shift it to the Dark Side in an attempt to gain control over midi-chlorians for the purpose of mastering the power of life over death (to become immortal) about a decade before TPM. After the two Sith Lords successfully tipped the balance of the Force, Plagueis resurrected (and killed) a darksider test subject over and over again, then healed an old injury to a degree, and then reached out to gain control over the galaxy's midi-chlorians to create life but the Force resisted the last one. Unbeknownst to Plagueis and Palpatine, the midi-chlorians responded by conceiving Anakin within Shmi Skywalker. I have no doubt that at the end of TPM, Palpatine strongly suspected that Anakin was the result of his master's efforts to create life over a decade earlier.

I think the problem with Grievous is that Lucas had so many things he had to do in Episode 3 that there wasn't much time to establish Grievous. He had to kill off the Jedi, have Palpatine overthrow the Republic, turn Anakin to the Dark Side, kill of Dooku, resolve the Clone War, have Yoda go into hiding on Dagobah, have Kenboi go into hiding on Tatooine, and explain what happened to R2 and 3P0. Oh, and find the time for Padme to have children, and separate them. Not much time left over for character development.

Yep. I love a lot of things about RotS, but this is all true.

To be fair, Episode 6 has similar problems. IMO it's why thinks like Leia being Luke's sister come off as a cheat. It would have been much better if Lucas would have revealed it before the final film in the trilogy.

The original Star Wars film was a boiling down of Lucas' ideas into the bare bones of what must be in the first film (with no guarantee there would be any sequels). There wasn't any room in the drama of ANH to have the 'long-lost sister' so it wasn't there (just like Lucas removed Vader being Luke's father).

The reference to "another" in TESB serves the dramatic purpose in that film of suggesting the possibility that Luke isn't protected by the script to survive. If Luke isn't the last hope of the Jedi and there's another hope, then Luke could die. It amplifies the drama of his final confrontation with Vader. It's a cheap trick, but it works. But it works better if it is vague... "Luke was our last hope." "No, there's his sister Leia." That just doesn't do it.

The "other" was always planned to be Luke's long-lost sister, but she wasn't originally going to be Leia, and the "other" wasn't even going to appear in RotJ. Luke's long-lost sister was originally planned to be an original character and not brought into the story until the sequel trilogy. But very early in pre-production of RotJ, Lucas made the decision that he wasn't going to make a sequel trilogy, so wrapped up the story of the previous two films in RotJ. And instead of introducing a new character, it just worked out well to say that the long-lost sister was Leia.

Lucas couldn't have revealed Leia was Luke's sister before RotJ because it hadn't yet been determined that she was the long-lost sister until the making of RotJ. If you feel that RotJ had too much plot to resolve then that might be because, when TESB was made, the story of the overall saga was planned to be 9 episodes long. As another example, Palpatine wasn't originally going to die until Episode IX.

Now the leftover scraps of unused plot from Lucas' originally planned sequel trilogy are in the hands of Disney for possible incorporation into their sequel trilogy.

Just wanted to add that one of our cats is named "Grievous". It's not our cat (it's my son's, who no longer lives at home), but still. It's funny to hear the next door neighbor say that name out loud. Laughing
