Anselmi
The land-bound rivals of the Nautolans
Appearance and Biology: The Anselmi are blue-skinned humanoids native to the ocean planet Glee Anselm. Squatter than their Nautolan cousins, Anselmi have wide faces, thick torsos, four fingers per hand, and three clawed toes per foot. Their most distinguishing features are two antennae-like horns protruding from their scalps and long, flexible tails. Once amphibious, they lost their ability to breathe underwater over generations. Their skin is smooth and tough, adapted for humid island climates, but not aquatic life.
Temperament: Anselmi are proud, territorial, and prone to resentment. Historically greedy and manipulative, many harbor bitterness toward their more successful Nautolan neighbors. Their personalities range from shrewd negotiators to volatile extremists. They’re known for suspicion of outsiders and a tendency to act aggressively when threatened or challenged.
History and Culture: Anselmi culture was once defined by grand empire-building and land reclamation efforts using damming systems to hold back Glee Anselm’s oceans. After their empire’s destruction by natural catastrophe—believed by some to be divine retribution—they became a scattered and bitter people. Their culture is now centered on ancestor worship, using sacrifices and ritual chants to gain favor from their forebears. Traditional weapons include blowpipes, polearms, and hunting bows.
Politics: Most modern Anselmi communities are clan-based, ruled by elder councils or war leaders. Extremist factions promote Nautolan hostility, while others try to maintain fragile peace. The scarcity of habitable land fosters internal rivalries, and dealings with the wider galaxy are rare and cautious.
Trade and Technology: Technologically behind galactic standards, many Anselmi rely on scavenged or bartered tech. While some coastal settlements integrate off-world gear, many tribes remain reliant on primitive tools. Their greatest technological strength lies in dam engineering and terrain-based survival systems.
Anselmi in the Galaxy: Anselmi are rarely encountered off Glee Anselm, though some serve as mercenaries, bounty hunters, or scavengers. Many remain distrustful of aliens, and Anselmi in the greater galaxy often keep their origins secret—especially around Nautolans. Those who do leave often do so out of exile, ambition, or desperation.

NOTES
Gamemaster Notes: Anselmi are excellent for creating xenophobic enclaves, land-based tribal societies, or desperate freedom fighters. They make strong antagonists in stories involving land conflict, ancestral mysteries, or rival species politics. Consider using Anselmi extremists in shadowy anti-alien movements or as bounty hunters for hire.
Personality Notes: Anselmi are prideful and stubborn. Many feel like the galaxy has passed them by. Those who travel off-world often do so to prove themselves—or escape the burden of ancestral shame.
