Giving this a bump on account of a thought I've had recently. While the WEG systems treats armor as adding Dice to the target's aggregate ability to resist damage, other systems treat armor as having a degree of Damage Reduction, or as a threshold which attacks must clear in order to do damage. I'm considering an alternate rule for armor where it uses Dice Caps to reduce the value rolled by the Damage dice.

For example, rather than armor having a stat of +2D vs. Physical, +1D vs. Energy, it would have Dice Caps of 5(energy) and 4(physical).

Now, I haven't spent a lot of time reasoning out the details of this, but it is an alternate use of Dice Caps, which have been largely left out of the official rules. I just wanted to put the idea out there to see what people think.

Interesting. Best armor you could hope for would get a cap of what? 3?

Theoretically, you could get all the way down to 1, but that would be reserved for armor that was basically a walking tank. In fact, I'm not sure I'd ever allow armor to get that low.

The problem I see is that it sort of penalizes weaker characters...the ones who need armor the most.

For example...if you have 2D in Strength...and you put on armor with a 5D cap to damage from energy...then what is the point of the armor?

You're still rolling just 2D against a 5D blaster.

The cap is built into each individual die. So capped at 5 means that a 5 or 6 is counted as a 5. So your 5D blaster has a max damage of 25 versus your 2D strength. Not ideal, but if you get some decent armor capping at 4 or 3, then a 5D weapon is maxing at a 20 or 15 on its damage rolls.
