On a similar note, have any of you ever used a D6 as a D2 or D3? As I was writing this, I was considering methods of randomizing a value less than 6 (in the 1-2 or 1-3 range), and substituting in a D2 or D3 for the flat modifier would be a decent way to do it.

And it's not quite heretical because it still uses a D6 to generate a fractional value of 6.

In fact, I actually have some novelty D3 dice sitting around, and all they are is D6 dice with duplicate values of 1, 2 and 3. And what is Watto's chance cube but a D2 using colors instead of numbers?

Thoughts?

Also, regarding the OP, what would be a good title for a system built around using a single D8 plus however many D6's? The two possibilities that occur to me would be D86 (for obvious reasons) or D76 (if one were to use a D8 to generate a 0-7 value). Which do you prefer? Or do you have a different idea?

Sure, I've done that.

This wouldn't need a system name as it is not really a whole new system but rather just an optional rule for the D6 system. "D6/8" wouldn't be a bad name for the optional rule.

Whenever I've needed to randomly determine something that only has two or three options.

In my random difficulty generation chart, I've got 1D÷2 and 4+(1D÷2). 1D÷2, round up the results, provides the same exact outcomes as a 1d3 would.
