Thanks, Garhkal.

It seems like this would make characters too strong right out of the gate, but if it works for your campaign and you are having fun, that's what counts. |
There is such a thing as an "action junky." I know several people who prefer to run toward combat, and who actively seek out opportunities for battle. As it translates into the game, for example, consider someone whose mission in life is to destroy as many imperial personnel as possible. Such a character would seek out opportunities to fight.
There are also cultures where violence or combat is a way of life. Even characters who do not "like" fighting--if they were from such a culture--could feasibly consider combat an "opportunity" to increase status or honor, etc. |

Naaman's method does indeed provide a reasonable alternative. I will say however that soaking with stamina up to racial Str max has not been unbalancing in my own games. The characters still get incapacitated, they still get mortally wounded, and they still die. They just don't croak quite as randomly. The death blows are more likely to come from main villains rather than the odd thug or stormtrooper (who are still lethal and do cap a player from time to time). It's proven much more cinematic for my sessions. |

I have a skill called Toughness based on the Strength attribute.
You can use it to soak damage, but only from brawling, stun attacks or blunt weapons.
It can also be used against edged weapons by a species with naturally armored hides.
This means a character can develop the skill necessary to really take a beating; like say, a boxer, but when a blaster pistol, even a hold-out type, is unexpectedly pointed at him, he's probably going to put his hands up.
(Also human-sized characters roll only 2D6 vs blaster weapons. I like blasters to be dangerous; always seek cover if you can.)
By the same token I also have a Strength-based skill called 'Hitting Power' which is the damage you roll in brawling. So two professional fighters can duke it out, or a professional fighter can knock some common mouthpiece on his shebs with a single punch....even maybe a wookiee, who would normally just rely on his sheer size to soak a punch.) |

Are those base skills or more like advanced skills in CP cost to raise? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Base skills...sort of.
Honestly, I've been tinkering with this game for so many years in relative isolation that it's really a mutant. Almost not even the same species.
I'm beginning to wonder how much use people might get out of my house rules as some are so far off the RAW.
Anyways...
In my version skills do not begin at base attribute level and improve from there. Like advanced skills, they all start at 1d. Until you get it up higher than your base attribute you're still in training; you can choose to default to your natural abilities by rolling the base attribute, but you always take half the value rolled when you default.
Also, you add the attribute dice value as pips. So a guy with a an attribute of 3D has an associated skill of 4D would roll 4D+3.
Or he could default and just roll the 3D and take half what he rolled...
Heresy, right? |

I think it's interesting that, not only did Ning Leihrec and I propose about the same thing, but we chose the same avatar. _________________ "I've Seen Your Daily Routine. You Are Not Busy!"
