Maybe the large size is to accommodate any cargo it might be carrying. The cargo could be scientific equipment or scientific samples.
I think you made a few errors here.
There's no crew skill listed.
You have Passive: 20/D. Do you mean 20/0D?
The 100-300/1.2/2 should be the atmosphere range, not the damage, which leaves the damage from the ion turret unknown.

True, but look at OTHER large bulk like freighter size ships, some of which still need a dozen or more crew..

Odd name: if it’s a research vessel, why isn’t it equipped to do actual research?
And considering the stock Starfighter-Scale Ion Cannon has a Range of 1-3/7/36, an Ion Cannon with a maximum Long Range of 20 doesn’t exactly qualify as “long range”.

He's probably in a lot of pain, ○nd/or heavily medicated. I'd cut him some slack & trust he'll make corrections/revisions when he can.
