What follows are details and notes for Alderaan taken from my pre-Empire campaign archives, some of which predate the prequels. None of this is official or Canon, but does not really contradict what has become official and canon, and may or may not be of aide to anyone running a campaign in those times.
As Alderaan was destroyed in Episode IV (where my Star Wars experience began), there was not a lot of detail on even terrain for a long time, and I needed to come up with something if I was going to have adventures go there. So I sat down and put a lot of thought into what type of world would be successful in a galactic economy as a "Peaceful Planet" with no weapons... I decide to go the route of a place of philosophy and higher learning.

Alderaan - at a glance
Alderaan is a peaceful world, with few weapons (in the words of Leia Organa, no weapons). A core world, capital of it's sector. Numerous outer space stations and ports greet incoming ships, which are subject to stringent customs rules. Armed ships must permit limiters to be placed onto weapons to proceed deeper in system, or land on Alderaan itself. Customs are primarily handled by the ubiquitous Corellian Corvette, which has become a favorite among the Alderaanian authorities, it is even said that the royal family owns their own personal vessel of this lineage.

Alderaan itself is a place of philosophy, higher learning, academics, and art (add culture with newer published material). The planet is home to many universities, academies, and libraries. The Alderaan Grand Library is perhaps one of the best information centers in the galaxy, second only to the Jedi Archives *(based on the idea of a Star Wars version of the library of Alexandria). Alderaan also houses many academic and scientific guilds, and does high trade in knowledge and ideas. Even the Jedi have a few temples and halls in the beautiful cities of Alderaan.

The cities are a stunning visual display of architectural beauty mixed with natural spaces, with towers, columns. and steps of white stone amidst vast parks and gardens. There are tree lined avenues and plazas, and vast public pools and fountains to encourage interpersonal discourse and discussion and public gatherings for the exchange of ideas, as well as tucked away grottoes and groves for quiet meditation when needed *(I had envisioned a slightly more futuristic Greek style architecture when I wrote this, with things like the Acropolis as well as Japanese zen gardens). Some come to Alderaan just to share the wonder and amazement that is the capital city.

While Alderaan has several Space Ports, the largest and most well equipped is in the capitol city. Most off world ships are routed here by flight control after preliminary outer-system customs for a more thorough inspection. Weapons transport on the surface is prohibited, and even Jedi are asked to turn over their Lightsabers or leave them behind on their ships *(newer information would have me amend this). Most Commerce in to Alderaan is technology items and interpersonal service droids such as protocol units, while most shipments out are luxury items and the arts.

While it is said there are no weapons on Alderaan, this is a bit of a misconception. The security forces are well equipped with less than lethal armaments. The average security officer will usually have a stun batton, while more serious reactionary forces will have stun pistols, glop grenades, restraining guns and net launchers, and reinforced body shields *(there are several items in the Corporate Sector book that would be ideal for use here).

Story Hooks - A Smuggler or Merchant PC might need to drop off or pick up artistic items for a job. Maybe the PCs need to research something and the materials are in the great library. Players can seek training and education in Knowledge, Technical, and Perception skills here. Perhaps a PC is a force student seeking a master at one of the Temples. Maybe the PCs need to escort dignitaries to a conference or guild meeting here. Maybe one of the Explorer o Scientific guilds wants to hire the PCs for an expedition.
