Eight years does seem to be about the maximum lifespan of a laptop. Both of my previous two have lasted about that long.

That sucks about your passwords. In the future, I would suggest using a password organizer app (I use Dashlane); it organizes all your passwords under a single app (with a single master password), and can be synced across multiple devices (I have it on my phone, tablet and laptop).

If you use Chrome and had Sync turned on, you shouldn't need to do anything. Just fire up your new laptop or any other computer, log in to Chrome and all your bookmarks and passwords will be restored.

I don't use Firefox, but if it has the same kind of feature to sync your bookmarks and logins across devices (phone, tablet, etc.) then you're still good.

You have my empathy. It is always painful to lose a computer. I wait for the day this laptop I type on will finally become one with the force (12 years old and counting).
