So I went to Half-Price Books for the Labor Day weekend sale (the same store where I found my lost ark). I found an original printing of The Star Wars Album (Official Collector's Edition), 1977. This is one of the earliest Star Wars resource publications. There are a lot of rare BTS photos. It's definitely in a less-than-perfect condition, which is understandable for a 42 year-old paperback book. But it is an awesome find for $8.00 plus tax!

I always like a good second hand score.

The story about the ark is just crazy. Very similar things have happened to me but none quite that good.

I have requested Tales of Power from the library. I love me some Star Wars historiography.

Cool! Shamanism is not for everyone. Let me know what you think.

I dunno, an anthropologist might classify all my collecting nostalgic items as totemic objects relating to ancestor worship, and my reenacting as a ceremony for creating sympathetic magic. I'd probably make a pretty good shaman.

Ok... it arrived. So about 5 pages into Tales of Power, the shaman guy says "we are luminous beings". Pretty clear this is indeed going to shed some light on the evolution of Yoda.

Grats! I go there every few weeks when I am in a larger city for my d&d group. However I have never found anything great and I am usually disappointed every time I leave wondering why I went into that dumpster fire in the first place.

You must have a really good HPB or gotten really lucky. Perhaps all of the ones in Indianapolis are just garbage, the world my never know.

Welcome, fellow midwesterner! I live in Columbus, Ohio. When I used to live in an adjacent county, I would make monthly pilgrimages to the Half-Price closest to work and I would always find cool stuff to buy. Then after I moved into Columbus (and eventually started working from home), that same Half-Price is still the closest one to me but I also branched out to visiting other Half-Price stores too, still going to one of them about once a month. In Central Ohio we currently have 5 stores, but one is too far out on the other side of town so I've only been there a couple times.

In recent years it has become fairly common for me to walk out of Half-Price without buying anything. I don't think they are garbage. I think it is because I have more stuff now, so want less. I have five 6-foot tall bookshelves full of books (and RPGs), a few boxes of comic books, a 6-foot movie shelf, a modest collection of vinyl records, etc. But I have noticed that I am more likely to find something to buy in the largest Half-Price in Columbus. Plus that is the Half-Price where I recovered the lost ark! "In my experience, there's no such thing as luck."

Cool

I think 5 or so is what is in Indianapolis and since I am driving 2 hours (sheesh) to nerd it up twice a month (WTF is wrong with me.) When I go I visit most or all of them. Yes they have more "stuff" but less stuff I am interested in and the "deals" seem to be less frequent as they sell on amazon and thrift books now as well. Goodwill seems to be less good also as they can cherry pick the "goodies" to sell online now. I do not think I have as many books but mine are packed away in tubs in my haymow until I get a bug up my butt to find something I once had. It could be I have found all the stuff I "need" to be satisfied but I am always expecting to occasionally find something I cannot live without. Sadly It has been about 8 years since I found anything at a thrift shop I could not live without, hence the jaded feeling. Smile

I live in an area with several 2nd hand stores, and more importantly, a large population of people living above the median income to donate cool stuff when they move. My (non-book) 2nd hand finds are sickeningly good. Unfortunately, with mobile barcode scanners, any remotely interesting book seems to be snatched up by professional resellers who spend several hours a week combing through all the used books.

If I lived in or near Columbus I would make frequent pilgrimages to the brightest beacon of 70's and 80's nostalgia: the last operating York Steak House.

I don't think I've ever been, but it is only 17 minutes away so we'll have to try that some time.
