I'm happy to revise too; that was a stab in the dark but seemed at least partially accurate.

It occurs to me that we might need to be looking at two different factors here, or at least taking them into account.

Everything we have been discussing so far, as I understand it, has been technology level. Blasters from 3400 years ago simply do not hold up against armor of today, and so forth. But should we also consider a scale for age? It might be slightly different. The two cases where a TOR Mantis-class ship are encountered by a Rebellion-era ship are either having been maintained for 3 millennia, or drifting in space. Those are very different conditions, and things break down differently.

Is it worth having a separate scale for maintained/ignored/derelict? What effect does 3 millennia of vacuum exposure and cosmic rays have on once-pristine, though underpowered equipment...?

I would think the cases of the older, not-maintained equipment could be handled on a case-by-case basis, unless it was being encountered regularly. That's what I'd do anyway. Assume some standard scaling to account for the time difference, then assume that the scale modifiers cover things that are cleaned up and functional (and give an adjustment if they're not).

Good point.

I can't recall off the top of my head; are there any rules for a starship that's been left to the elements/vacuum exposed/micrometeroid pitted?

I could see some really cool tables for each system. What are the odds of condition of the blaster gas packs being good after 3000 years in space? What about a 500 year old engine left to the sands of Tatooine? What about a modern-era vessel parked next to a volcano for a week?

If anyone were to make an Eras of Play Companion (which I've considered), these sorts of tables could be really handy.

Thoughts?

Tables are a great idea. My thought would be - as long as the item floating in space wasn't hit by something (a micro meteor or the like) - the vacuum of space would likely preserve it pretty well.
