Any thoughts as to the new TIE from the SOLO teaser?

https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/180937/is-there-a-new-tie-fighter-model-in-the-solo-movie

Looks like it has twin cannons of some sort in its side fuselage.

Yeah, I mentioned this in the Solo thread in the General Star Wars forum.

Hell if I know what they'll call it.

You knew it was coming...

TIE/ac Starfighter

Image

The basic TIE Starfighter is a highly specialized space superiority and fleet escort fighter. Because of this specialization, it is deficient in other areas, such as reconnaissance, ordnance delivery and heavy energy weapons, and TIE variants have been produced to counter those deficiences. The TIE/ac is one such example. Based on an expanded TIE fuselage, the TIE/ac mounts a gun pod containing a heavy laser and heavy ion cannon, which are used to subdue or destroy larger and more durable targets, such as Alliance fighters or heavily armed shuttles and freighters. While it sacrifices some speed and maneuverability, it is also more durable than a standard TIE, and is also one of the first TIE models to be equipped with deflector shields.

I hadn't even thought of it, but this stat fills a nice niche in the Imperial starfighter family, as no other production model is equipped with ion cannon. Considering the era in which the Solo film will take place, I'm picturing the TIE/ac as a contemporary to the TIE/gt and the 1st. generation TIE Fighter.

Saw this TIE in the trailer and thought it looked quite interesting, I'm a bit of sucker for ship variants.

Not sure about the Ion Cannon speculation in the stat block though, it looks more to me like a simple TIE with what could be a heavier loadout - it's lasers look exactly the same as the other TIE fighters in the trailer footage.

Just my take though.

I guess we'll see in May

I like the stat work, CRMcNeill, but where did the idea for the ion canon and heavy laser canon come from? Looking at the short clip from the teaser, I only see fire coming from the two 2 fire-linked cannon's on the secondary fuselage. Were you thinking the ion canon was on the main fuselage?

I like the ship's design - it's cool to see these variants on film.

The ion cannon was an intuitive choice I made since there aren’t any Imperial fighters equipped with ion cannon (apart from super-rare experimental models like the TIE Defender). I suppose it could be a modular pod that can switch out as needed for the mission assignment.

Question: What is the "ac" in "TIE/ac" supposed to stand for? We know that the "ln" for the original TIE fighters, AKA the "TIE/ln" stands for "line fighter". So what's the "ac" for? I doubt it stands for "air conditioned".... Razz

EDIT: Never mind, it stands for Assault Cannon. My bad. That's what I get for not reading everything thoroughly before posting.

EDIT 2: At least I got to make a crack about air conditioned TIE fighters, so maybe it was worth it after all. 8)

That's the TIE Antagonist. The main antagonist of the film flies it. It's different, so you can tell.

This ship is the Heavy TIE Fighter as named on starwars.com

Also known as the TIE/rb, with heavier cannons.

Means I'll have to call one of my ships something else now.

Compensating for the relative fragility of the unshielded TIE starfighter is the armored TIE/rb, a reinforced heavy starfighter with much more powerful laser cannons.

Makes you wonder then, if its heavier armed AND armored, why it was not used in latter years of the empire??

But then again, that's my main gripe about adding in ANY new fighter variant in the prequels/earlier films... IF THEY are so bloody good, why are they not around later on??

The classic answer would be "cost". If it costs less to train a pilot and shove 'em into a cheap fighter than it does to make a better fighter, then pilots are disposable. Also, it might be a point of policy by Sheevie boi himself that people are disposable. And, maybe there's some nepotism about "good enough TIEs" that makes the good TIEs be relegated to later projects.

Personally, I think it's a bit of one and a bit of the other - and a need for any new Star Wars movie to give stuff their own spin, chronology notwithstanding.
