Most of the time, everyone here gets along fine and there are no issues. But every now and then, tempers flare or other user issues occur which impact the site and/or experience of its users. Good people have bad days and stuff happens. We don't expect absolute perfection but these forum guidelines were designed to minimize negative experiences and the need for moderation as much as possible. Please take the time to read these and take these guidelines to heart.

Sorry for the 'wall of text' but I can easily imagine someone saying, "Where does it say that?" Here is where it says that. Better to be thorough than vague. Smile

The Rancor Pit - Registration Agreement Terms
See the next post below.

The Rancor Pit - Forums Posting Guidelines

(1) Respect Moderator wisdom and judgment. While these guidelines are comprehensive, they can't possibly address every possible situation that may come up on the forum. Admins and Moderators have the authority to make judgments and enact moderations such as editing posts, issuing warnings, locking threads, and more as they deem necessary. Our active Moderators are cheshire and jmanski. Please heed their posts as if they were mine. (It is a best practice before submitting a reply to any thread to use the Preview feature and scroll down to see if there have been any new replies in a thread since you last checked. You may find a new moderator/admin post that wasn't there when you started typing your reply.) And every time you log in, please check your PM indicator at the top of the page. If it says you have a message, please see who it is from. If it is from anyone other than an admin or moderator, you are free to ignore it. If it is from an admin or moderator, please do NOT ignore it. Please read it and reply accordingly when warranted. If you find that a post of yours is edited or missing from the forum, please do not repost it. We will PM you to advise the reason why when warranted. Moderation may occur at any length of time after the post being posted.

(2) Publicness and Privacy. This is a public forum and all forum post content is public. Anything you post publicly can be responded to publicly. You do not need to ask for permission to use anything posted publicly, but when sharing something anywhere you are expected to always give credit where credit is due by both username and website. Before sharing anything from a PM, please consider intentions of the PM and whether it should be shared. Don't share passwords or financial accounts here, even by PM. Please do not expose personal details about someone that they themselves have not already disclosed publicly here on this site. Please do not impersonate anyone. Do not share user accounts with anyone else. Do not create multiple user accounts for any other reason than unresolved account access issues, and even then this legitimate reason should never be kept secret. Please see this thread before creating a new account, which includes an email address to email as a last resort before creating a new account.

(3) Keep it tidy. Before posting a new thread, please read the forum descriptions and post in the most applicable area. Please use the Search function or otherwise look for recent threads on the same topic before posting a new thread or resurrecting an old one. Please do not cross-post the same questions/topics in multiple forums, and please do not duplicate posts in multiple threads or the same thread. Topic drift is normal but if a tangent discussion gets out of hand, you may politely try to steer it back on course or request that a thread be split. (Admins and Mods can split but not merge threads.) Feel free to break up epic mega-posts into multiple posts as you deem appropriate, but please do not post multiple tiny replies just to increase your post-count. (Outside of Administrators and Moderators, the rank titles are just for fun.) When using the quote feature to quote from another post, always maintain who wrote the post you are quoting in the first quote block of your post, unless you are only quoting from the post appearing immediately above yours. If you are quoting multiple other users in a single post, always maintain each user in the first quote block for each user. It is a best practice when using the quote button that you edit the quote text in your reply to only include what you are replying to, especially for longer posts. Please do not post images with the [Img] tags that are greater than 750 pixels wide - Instead just post a URL link to a larger image. In the same regard, do not post very long URLs that stretch the page horizontally – Please either remove unnecessary aspects of the URL to shorten it, or use the [URL] tags with a short text description (the second option that appears when you hover your cursor over the [URL] tag button). Please spell check your thread titles.

(4) No grammar nazism. The default language of this forum is American English. It is a common courtesy and best practice to run your posts through a spellchecker and make them as legible as possible. However, please do not offer any unsolicited corrections to another forum user's grammar or spelling. If you truly cannot discern the intended meaning of someone's statement then of course you can politely ask for clarification, but if you do understand what they mean, then please just let it go. However, thread titles may have spelling corrected or otherwise be clarified as needed. If you would like to point out that another user's thread title is spelled incorrectly, then please PM me, not them. Please do not post a reply in the thread pointing out the typo/error. (If I spell words wrong in my own thread titles, feel free to PM me.) It is ok to send PMs to other users with post spelling corrections if you PM a single request for permission to do so first and they reply affirmatively.

(5) Keep it tasteful. Please do not post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-oriented material, whether it be in text, images, or links to such material. Let's please try to keep the content here generally "PG-13" in spirit. Common sense should be a clear guide, but if you aren't sure if a subject matter is appropriate please feel free to PM me or a moderator before posting. Don't underestimate the communicative power of innuendo.

(6) Avoid politics and religion. Please avoid real-world sociopolitical and religious references (including antireligion) except as they directly relate to Star Wars in-universe, and even then, please use caution. As the majority of users here are American, the political avoidance emphasis is on modern USA politics, but we expect everyone to self-moderate political content about their own and other countries. Please: No Obama, Hillary, or Trump. Do not discuss real-world political values inherent in Star Wars. Do not state or refer to any aspect of Star Wars having a political agenda. Do not share links to pages with political content. Proselytization will be treated as spam.

(7) Keep it civil. Anger, fear, aggression… the Dark Side are they. Please be respectful of the forums, other users, and their posts. Disagreements will occur on the forums, and there is usually nothing wrong with calm and civil discussion of the Star Wars franchise and RPGs. Sometimes all you can do is agree to disagree. Please try to avoid the mere appearance of incivility. It is a best practice to avoid excessive negativity on any subject (but see 11 below for a related imperative). Please be mindful of general forum etiquette, tone, and knee-jerk reactions. (It is a best practice to be aware of logical fallacies and cognitive bias.) Do not troll others. Do not post fear mongering statements. Do not state or imply that this website will or may face legal situations (Instead, PM any concerns to me). Please do not engage in name-calling and personal attacks. Harassment, bullying, and abusive behavior will not be tolerated (even by PM). Discriminatory remarks made on the basis of (but not limited to) race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or religion will not be tolerated here. Hate speech directed toward anyone (on this forum or elsewhere) will not be tolerated here. Please do not spam or otherwise vandalize the forums. (Advertisements for PbP games on other websites should not be posted here.)

(8) Official game rules. Everywhere on this site (except for the First Edition/IAG forum), the second edition of the game is the default official RAW being discussed unless otherwise specified or obvious from context. Furthermore, the R&E update is the default version of second edition being discussed unless otherwise specified or obvious from context. When citing RAW on these forums, most of the time you will be citing the R&E book. If you have a question about official rules, post it in the Official Rules forum. When referring to RAW please use the official game terminology, even if your house rules change the terms. Do not attempt to pass off your house rules as RAW. Many of us here are tinkerer GMs, so when debating the merit of tweaks and new house rules, please keep in mind that the official rules are not inherently superior just by virtue of being officially published. This equally applies to officially published stats vs. fan stats.

(9) Consensus and Criticism. There is never any requirement to achieve consensus on anything discussed on these forums, so please do not feel inhibited from expressing a minority opinion. And asking for thoughts opens the door to a wide range of responses, including criticism. Even without asking, posting anything invites criticism. It is unrealistic to only expect support for an idea you post, and if you can't handle criticism please reconsider posting it. On the other hand, if you vehemently oppose an idea and/or don't have anything to add to the discussion, please consider just moving on. And in any case, please try to keep criticism constructive when possible.

(10) Research. Wookieepedia is your friend. Before asking (or arguing) about the existence of something in canon or legends, please consult Wookieepedia or another source. This is not to say that Wookieepedia is always 100% accurate, but discounting it as a valuable resource for that reason is throwing out the baby Luke with the bacta bath water. (If Wookieepedia is incorrect about something, show us why.) It is a best practice to do some research on a subject before posting or replying about that subject, and this research includes searching for and reviewing prior Rancor Pit threads that discuss the topic. Do not attempt to pass off your personal canon as official canon. If you wish to discuss or propose modifications to official rules, please review, try to understand, and reference the official rules you are modifying first. Also, please try to avoid sharing links to sensational clickbait and unreliable journalism. Please research validity and look for confirmation of news and such from reputable sources before posting. Please try to share links to pages as official and close to the original source of the news as possible. As a Star Wars discussion forum we often discuss fictional science in applicable contexts, but do not promote real world misinformation, pseudoscience, antiscience, anti-intellectualism, or conspiracy theories.

(11) Negativity about the franchise. As Star Wars fans, we all have our passionate likes, dislikes, and opinions about different aspects of the franchise. We won't all agree on what is good or even acceptable Star Wars. There is no rule against just expressing your own negative views about Star Wars. Is nothing sacred? The very basis of the franchise and its creator are special considerations. Bashing the films or George Lucas will not be tolerated on these forums. So you can still express your negative opinions and dislikes of these subjects, but please refrain from expressing excessive negativity and check yourself before you go into rant mode against them. The entire Star Wars franchise, Legends and non-film Canon material both, is based on the films, the primary media and centerpiece of the franchise. Your least favorite Star Wars film is another die hard fan's favorite movie. Attempting to persuade others to hate a film as much as you do will not be tolerated. Do not even post links to bashing. If someone else enjoys a Star Wars film you don't, let them.

(12) Default "films". By default, mentions of the Star Wars films or even "the films" on The Rancor Pit forums refer to the live action theatrical films, the heart of the franchise (see above). If someone asks a question about "the films" and you choose to include the Ewok TV movies or The Clone Wars animated theatrical movie in your answer that is your prerogative, but please do not correct someone for not specifying the qualification of "live action theatrical". They shouldn't have to and here they don't have to. For absolute definition, by default Star Wars films are Lucas' six-part main saga and Disney's growing list of films.

(13) Spoiler policy. All spoiler discussions and media of current and forthcoming Star Wars content of any source will be protected by the following spoiler protection practices: (a) Do not post spoilers in thread titles. (b) For each film or Disney+ series, there will be a single "Spoilers Allowed" thread stickied to the top of the General Star Wars forum when it premieres. These are the only threads where open spoiler discussions of these things are allowed without restriction. (And please do not 'cross-spoil' by posting spoilers for one show or film in the Spoilers Allowed thread of another show or film.) (c) For story releases less than three weeks old of media other than films and Disney+ series, such as new novels and comic books series, please feel free to create a 'spoilers allowed' thread if there hasn't already been one created for that item. (d) Outside of the Spoilers Allowed threads, please use White Font Colour tags for any spoiler text. Please be tactical about the use of spoiler tagging. If the mere presence of spoiler tagging would hint to a revelation in the film or episode, please instead post it in the applicable Spoilers Allowed thread. (e) Outside of the Spoilers Allowed threads, please do not post images with spoilers, including in the Star Wars Memes thread. As an option you can always post a URL to spoiler images. (f) Outside of the Spoilers Allowed threads, please clearly identify links to web pages with spoiler content. If the URL text itself is a spoiler, please only post it in the applicable Spoilers Allowed thread. (g) Three weeks after a new media's release date, spoiler restrictions no longer have to be followed for the release. So for a Disney+ series, when an episode becomes three weeks old, you still have to follow the restrictions for any more recent episodes, until they each 'age out of the spoiler zone' on their own schedules. Please see the Spoiler Policy thread for more information.

(14) Bootleg policy. It is commonly known that there are multiple websites where bootleg digital copies of WEG Star Wars RPG books and other copyrighted works are available for free download. The Rancor Pit Forums is not one of those sites. Please do not post direct links to those downloads or even links to sites where they are located. The Rancor Pit does not endorse or condone illegal pirating. Please note this bootleg restriction does not apply to fan-made supplements which are freely discussed in the Tools forum, and shared here. Fan-made supplement fluff text should not be plagiarisms, and please do not create and share free fan documents with even the appearance of official, licensed, and/or for-sale products (see here for more details). Also, please also do not share links to or discuss how to acquire copies of films not sold through official channels, including fan edits of films. Sharing links to video clips is ok. Please do not state, imply, or share links to opinions indicating it is ok to steal Lucasfilm IP or any other Disney IP.

(15) Commerce policy. No commercially oriented posts are permitted on these forums, except those regarding sales of legal Star Wars products and WEG Star Wars related services. No one may begin selling without sending a PM to Whill asking for approval and receiving approval first. To qualify for asking permission, you must not have the rank of Cadet. Approval to sell may be denied or revoked at any time for any reason, including not being active in non-commercial discussions lately, and violations of this and other forum guidelines. When approved, you may post links to items for sale elsewhere or post about items you have that you would like to sell or barter in the Commerce and Collections forum. Anyone may post 'looking for X' or want lists there. Any price negotiations between forum users should move to PM, but monetary transactions should move offsite. Whenever an item is sold, the seller must update the post with "[SOLD]". Even if not sold, sale threads may be locked if a seller becomes inactive on this website. If you would like to share links to items for sale frequently you should post replies to a single thread instead of creating a new thread for each one. Spammers will be banned. Those accused of fraudulent sales activity may be banned. The Rancor Pit and its staff are not liable for any commercial transactions.

(16) Reporting Issues. Spammers can be reported in the Report Spammers thread. To report any other possible violations of the above guidelines, please feel free to PM me (or a moderator if it is urgent and I am offline). If you have any personal issues with another forum user, a moderator, or even me, please feel free to PM me about it (but be reminded that guideline against harassment applies to myself and the moderators too).

(17) Exculpatory Provision. The Rancor Pit Forums is a nonprofit community service privately funded by its owner, and its staff are volunteers. Although all reasonable efforts will be made to prevent and address occurrences of the issues mentioned above towards the goal of everyone having a positive experience here, the Rancor Pit owner and staff assume no responsibility for violations of forum guidelines or any wrongdoings committed by users.

(18) Forum Posting Guideline updates. These guidelines may be updated at any time. A reply in this thread will be generated to announce significant updates, but this OP will be edited so you do not necessarily have to read any of the replies in the thread to see the updated version. It is a best practice to revisit the guidelines from time to time.

(19) Have Fun. Remember, we are all here because we enjoy the WEG Star Wars D6 RPG. This is a community of game lovers. Have fun!

Please do not test the tolerance and post something against any of the guidelines just to see if it will fly. These guidelines are here to empower you to self-moderate.

TL;DR? "Don't be a jerk" sums it up pretty well. Please note that not reading the forum posting guidelines does not mean they don't apply to you.

If you have any questions, please feel free reply to this thread or PM me. Thank you.

Welcome to The Pit - SITE MAP: https://rancorpit.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6795

"Please do not post images that are greater than 750 pixels wide - Instead just post a URL link to a larger image..."

This is not an update but it addresses a question I received about posting images. I apologize that this forum has never had and still doesn't have the ability to resize images. Resize or even auto-resize may exist here in the future, but it definitely doesn't now. That is why we have this guideline to not post images wider than 750 pixels.

If you want to share an internet image that is too large, you can try to find the same image of a different size elsewhere on the internet. I usually use google chrome on my mac computer. If I right-click on an internet image, one of the options I usually get is "Search Google for Image". When I click on that, it brings up a google search of the best guess for a description of that image with the image at the top. By the image it will say "Find other sizes of this image:" and then have some link options such as "All sizes" "Small" "Medium" and "Large". Try Medium if it is there. Then when you click on the size link, it will be an image search of the image of various sizes. If you want to post an image that is as big as possible, then choose one where the width (the first number of the size) is as close as you can get to 750 without going over. Then you can right-click on the image and choose "Copy Image Address" or click on the image and go to the page where it is and get the URL. I'm sorry if you don't have the same options with your OS and browser, but I would think that you might have something similar available to you.

Another option is to resize a large image. If you don't have an image editing application on your computer, https://pixlr.com/editor/ is a decent little online image editor that allows you to open images from your computer or a URL, and then resize (and perhaps crop) them. After editing it, then you would have to save the resized image on your computer and upload it to a file storing/sharing site such as https://www.mediafire.com/ . Then you can get the URL for the image and post the image here.

Lastly there is always the easy option of just only posting the URL and a link to the image instead of posting the image itself. You can always specify the text of an image link. Here is one with the BB Coding turned off so you can see how it is built:

I added the following to Guideline (1) in the OP.

Site Admin wrote:

Thank you. Also, I added the following new guideline and shifted subsequent guideline numbers accordingly.

Two statements were already in Keep It Civil and I moved them here. The rest of this was in my initial brainstorm for forum guidelines and I just noticed it had somehow gotten lost in the process.

I also added a sentence about default forum language to Guideline (4). Thank you.

PostPosted: Sun May 06, 2018 9:06 pm    Post subject: Re: *** Forum Posting Guidelines *** Reply with quote

I reordered some of the guidelines to have a better flow.

Quote:
It is a best practice when using the quote button that you edit the quote text in your reply to only include what you are replying to, especially for longer posts.

I added this to (3).

Quote:
Please avoid real world sociopolitical and religious references (including antireligion) except as they directly relate to Star Wars in-universe, and even then, please use caution.

I added antireligion to this sentence in (6).

Quote:
Disagreements will occur on the forums, and there is usually nothing wrong with calm and civil discussion of the Star Wars franchise and RPGs. (It is a best practice to be aware of logical fallacies and cognitive bias.)

I eliminated the logical fallacies guideline but merged this text from it with (7).

Quote:
However many of us here are tinkerer GMs, so when debating the merit of tweaks and new house rules, please keep in mind that the official rules are not inherently superior by virtue of being officially published.

I added this reminder to (8). There is a difference in saying "RAW works for me because..." and "But RAW is official and you are just some GM on the internet." Please be the former and not the latter.

Quote:
Wookieepedia is your friend. Before asking (or arguing) about the existence of something in canon or legends, please consult Wookieepedia or another source. This is not to say that Wookieepedia is always 100% accurate, but discounting it as a valuable resource for that reason is throwing out the baby Luke with the bacta bath water. (If Wookieepedia is incorrect about something, show us why.) It is a best practice to do some research on a subject before posting or replying about that subject.

I added this new research guideline (10).

Quote:
Please note this bootleg restriction does not apply to fan-made supplements which are freely discussed in the Tools forum, and shared here.

I added the fan-made supplements library link to the end of this sentence in (14).

I suggest everyone revisit the complete Forum Posting Guidelines at the top of this thread.

Please see the two replies in this thread for posts about the Summer 2018 blow-up in the General Star Wars forum.

Below are the latest updates (additions/edits are in blue) with some commentary.

Whill wrote:
(6) Avoid politics and religion. ...Do not discuss real-world political values inherent in Star Wars. Do not state or refer to any aspect of Star Wars having a political agenda. Do not share links to pages with political content.

Sharing links might seem safe because you aren't going into your views here, but I still don't like it. This site needs to be free of real world politics. There is a blessed diversity of WEG gamers here, and we disagree on many things game-related and Star Wars-related as it is. We do not need to add personal real world political values into the mix. Towards this goal, I do not want to even see references to Star Wars having a political agenda, even if you do not go into what your specific political views are and what the agenda is. Why? Here's why:

You: I didn't care for the political agenda in this movie.
Me: There was no agenda.
You: Yes there was. It was the...

Star Wars is what it is and has always been. By even merely stating there is an agenda, you are instantly revealing your views and publicly casting political valued judgements. And the conversation can go nowhere good from there, so there is no reason to even bring it up in the first place. There are plenty other things to talk about for Star Wars. If you do not value diversity and social justice, please keep it to yourself.

Forum members on multiple areas of the political spectrum have expressed they don't want real-world politics here. This has to be the easiest guideline to follow. It's not hard to not accidentally, "Oops, I politicked." Please just don't even go there. Thank you.

(7) Keep it civil. ...Discriminatory remarks made on the basis of (but not limited to) race, gender identity, sexual orientation, or religion will not be tolerated here. Hate speech directed towards anyone (on this forum or elsewhere) will not be tolerated here.

This is just a revision to include some specific examples of discrimination. The Rancor Pit actively condemns hatred.

(10) Do your research. Wookieepedia is your friend... Also, please try to avoid sharing links to sensational clickbait and unreliable journalism. Please research validity and look for confirmation of news and such from reputable sources before posting. Please try to share links to pages as official and close to the original source of the news as possible.

Remember the story shared here about the supposed top secret meeting of the Disney executives (nonsensically including Marvel execs) that the author somehow quoted parts of the conversation from? Where they discussed firing Kathleen Kennedy? That was pure rubbish. In reality her original Lucasfilm contract with George Lucas was just coming to an end this year. It as recently announced that Kennedy was given a three-year extension to her contract. Disney could have let her go with no legal battle or expense, and chose not to. In this day and age, rumors are very common, so please do not just share any bs out there. Please do some research and apply some critical thinking before sharing things here. Thank you.

(11) Negativity about the franchise. ...Attempting to persuade others to hate a film as much as you do will not be tolerated. Do not even post links to bashing. If someone else enjoys a Star Wars film you don't, let them.

It was already specified in the guidelines to not even share links to film bashing. No one is saying that you are a Russian troll and that your non-political hatred of a film is not genuine. No one is saying your criticisms aren't valid. Many members have expressed to me that they do not want excessive negativity here, and the films are a special protected topic. You can express negative opinions, but no bash-fests of films. Even TLJ. This includes posting links to such content. Thank you.

One final reminder. Please do not test the tolerance and post something against any of the guidelines just to see if it will fly. These guidelines are here to empower you to self-moderate. Thanks.

On that 'No politics' angle. If i say asked a question "So when you design a planet that's not under imperial sway, how do you figure out what major countries are there? How do you go about deciding what sort of political structure they operate under??"
Would THAT be allowed?? OR is it only 'NO Real world politics'..

Avoid politics and religion.

Fictional politics are fine. Real politics are not.

No grammar nazism. The default language of this forum is American English. However, please do not offer any unsolicited corrections to another forum user's grammar or spelling... It is ok to send PMs to other users with post spelling corrections if you PM a single request for permission to do so first and they reply affirmatively.

It seems that some people don't mind having their spelling corrected, while others do mind. I added this for those that don't.

Keep it tidy. Please do not post images that are greater than 750 pixels wide - Instead just post a URL link to a larger image.

This is just a reminder. Here is a post with more specific guidance for dealing with images. It's not hard to right click on an image and inspect the details to see how wide it is before posting it here.

I really don't think this is unreasonable. My primary computer is a laptop with a widescreen-dimensioned monitor (15" diagonal size). I have good vision for middle age requiring only minor correction for reading, and I do always wear my reading glasses when using the Pit. I have my browser's zoom set at 150% for this site which is really normal-looking text size matching the typeface of a lot of books I read (and no I do not read large-print books).

Images much larger than 750 pixels wide make the webpage wider and extend post text on the whole entire page along the width of the image. The horizontal scroll bar appears on my page and I do not have a roller for than on my mouse. Believe it or not, I try to read (or at least skim) every single post on this site. I hate having to scroll right and left for every line of every post on a page, so I'm not doing it. Others have expressed the same sentiment to me so I am not alone in not wanting this time-consuming annoyance. Some people use the Pit with smaller monitors than I do and/or worse vision and thus larger zoom.

Please don't intentionally post an image or link that violates the guidelines with the attitude, 'Well if Whill doesn't like it, he'll edit it.' That's just plain lazy. What's worse than a forum with a bunch of rules? A guy going around enforcing them.

This isn't a power trip. I don't enjoy making rules, but it's my job to engender a good environment. Everyone has a right to an enjoyable Rancor Pit. We don't enjoy moderating others, but we will if we have to. We prefer to not have to.

Thank you.

Yeah, the No grammar nazism rule is something I've run afoul of more than once; I keep forgetting that PMs are an option.

I'll do better in the future.

Ackshually, it's not "grammar Nazi" any more. Now they're the "Alt-Write."

Whill, just a suggestion, but perhaps you should lock this topic down and start up a separate Feedback and Commentary page for the guidelines. Obviously, people are going to want to talk about it, but it might help things stay clearer to have the Guidelines and only the Guidelines on one topic.

I give all credit to the Internet, but good ones deserve to be passed on.
