Simple answer: hyperbole. The First Order “built” it. “They” are all part of the First Order. Therefore, “they” built it. It’s propaganda, the big lie. Even if they didn’t build it, they’ll tell everyone, even their own people, that they did to boost external appearance and internal morale. Even if they found an ancient weapon and added on to it, they can still exaggerate and say they built the whole thing.

Agree here. They built it, in the sense that they got it operational. Now, First Order scientists may have designed it and their engineers built it. Non-First Order scientists may have designed it and the FO Engineers built it. Or, they may have found the thing and cleaned it up enough that they could make it work. In any case, Hux is going to say they built it, because they're the First Order, so of course they built it. If they found it, it was Fate giving it to them.

[grumble]Out of everything JJ Abrams could’ve carried over from the Legends canon, why did he have to pick the Superweapon-Of-The-Month Club?[/grumble]

My feeling is that there are a lot of very angry ancient civilizations in the Star Wars Galaxy*, who wanted to lash out at everyone.

*Since the construction "The Star Wars Galaxy" is an awkward construction, I suggest we refer to it as "The Pizza Galaxy", since a lot of it comes back to the Slice. Wink

The Pizza Galaxy? That reminds me of Pizza the Hut from Spaceballs.

Did you hear that? Pizza kicked the bucket! Now we don't have to pay him the million!

One of these days I'll get around to finally watching Spaceballs from beginning to end...
