As pointed out over on the Holonet, a Bwing has a LOWER hull than both an Xwing and Ywing, yet is supposed to be a more 'robust' heavy fighter/bomber>

SO has anyone figured out WHY the Bwing has such a low hull?

Poor design. The Hull value on a stat isn't just a measurement of armor thickness; it's an aggregate of all the factors that contribute to a ship's ability to absorb damage. The B-Wing may have heavy armor and shields, but lack the redundant backup systems and in-flight repair systems controlled by the astromech. There is also the potential for failure due to damage to the gyro-cockpit function.

Personally, I always thought of the B-Wing as more of a glass cannon myself. It's extremely powerful offensively, but it's gyro design makes it rather week.

This also explains why the Y-wing is still in service despite it's age of service.

This is why zombie movies have people mounting machine guns on pick up trucks, not a 1981 Porsche 928.

From a strictly mathematical standpoint, the B-Wing is pretty tough. With a 3D Hull and 2D Shields, it's a match for the 4D+1D of the X-Wing, which also had a reputation for toughness.

My impression from the The Star Wars Sourcebook in the 1e days (where these Hull stats came from) was that the X-wing and Y-wing Hulls were higher because they had astromechs that can do in-flight repairs. But they never came out and codified that as far as I remember.

Maybe but you need to get shields UP and BTB Ion cannons ignore shields..

So, the prototype, extremely rare elite fighter. Of course, if you start introducing TIEs from the X-Wing games, you also open the door to the X-Wing games' rules for ion cannon, specifically, that they didn't just ignore shields.

So, if the Ion cannons ignore shields, and part of a hull rating is based on structural shields, do Ion cannons ignore part of the hull rating?

Besides fighting Imps, Bwings DO get used to pound pirates (who often are equipped with Skiprays and ywings, both of which have ion cannons)..

Well, that's not really a problem for me, as I've long used different house rules for ion cannon, specifically, that they don't get to ignore shields.
