I'm not so sure about it inflicting Death Star scale damage... rather, it seems to me that it resists damage and acts in collision like a death star scale object.

Which is why you need to know how strong the shield is to calculate damage, as well as Comm/ Scan Difficulty. I don't see the problem.

Specifically this line:

Quote:
Effects:
-Shield inflicts 3D Death Star-Scale Damage on contact with any physical object.

Not that it is a 3D(DS) rated shield, but that it inflicts that damage on any contact.

I'm not going to nitpick this to death. If you want to use it, but feel that a character in a space suit could get close enough to spray paint his name on it without getting fried, feel free, but as far as I'm concerned, this thing is a giant bug-zapper in space.

Which conflicts with how shields work... a wall, not a bug zapper.

Example:

At 1:40 in the video, the ship hits the shield gate... collision damage. It then skitters across the gate. It's not a bug zapper... it hits a low-friction wall and slides.

I'm unaware of a notation in the rules to the effect that an X-Wing that takes 3D Death Star Scale damage is somehow less destroyed if it breaks up on impact rather than simply disintegrating.

This rule is consistent with existing planetary shield rules in the SWU. Why change it when the X-Wing ends up destroyed either way?

Because there is a difference between "Touch" and "Impact".

Semantics.

I don't consider it to be consequential enough to change the way all planetary shields function. YMMV.
