BY the rules, there is no real tie breaker when it comes to both sides rolling the same #, however often people break it by comparing the actual PER score, having a roll off, OR defaulting to "pcs win ties"..

garhkal the RAW is that the initiator of the action wins in the case of a draw, is it not? I seemed to remember reading that.

For actions itself, yes. Such as me shooting or punching you. I just have to equal or beat your dodge/brawl parry.

HOWEVER, initiative is not seen the same way..

Yeah, thanks. that's the rule I got muddled with.

This is why after realising my mistake and checking the rulebook, I edited the post with the actual RAW on tied initiative - a Re-roll in the event of a tie (SWRPG 2nd Ed R&E page 78 ).

The downside is having to keep a running total of everyone's initiative status, which has led to grouping NPCs.

Both methods have their uses, IMO. Regarding the Shadowrun method, I'm partial to it, but does it use the same values as D6? What I mean is, how common is it to get a 43 on Initiative in Shadowrun compared to SWD6 (using the method discussed above)? Is it the sort of thing where a base 10 system will port directly over, or would a different base value be more appropriate?

Me either. As a general rule I try to keep rolling dice to the minimum possible number, and the initiative re-roll is one that can be simply cut.
