True. I'm working with the theory that wings on SWU spacecraft are some component of the maneuvering system, be it "lateral controls" or "ethereal rudder". _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. Agreed. It almost seemed like someone said "lets design a new fighter just for the heck of it, and give it a swing wing design..." _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Well I don't think it was just for the heck of it. Despite the movie being an immediate prequel to ANH, they still wanted to give us some new vehicles like the first three prequels did (It not only gives fans something new to "ooh, ahh, cool" at, but it also gives them some new merchandising to sell. As far as the wings, I'm sure there was a conscious decision to make another "lettered" Rebel ship. X, Y, A, B, some EU ships and now "U". _________________ *

Maybe it is simply spars in order to have something to focus a repulsorfield off of? Leverage, if you will? |

Whatever. Wings with no readily apparent purpose have been on Star Wars starships basically as long as there has been Star Wars. Perhaps they are Disbelief Suspension Field Generators, designed to protect Star Wars fans who are too uptight from the hazards of just enjoying the visuals and the story... _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. And imo that is 'the for the heck of it' aspect.. Just for merchandising.. much like BB8 for TFA.. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Also, the entire design reminds me of the Earth Directorate starfighters from the Buck Rogers tv show. That isn't a bad thing, by the way. |

Well it was a bit more than that. In their thinly-disguised reprise of ANH, they needed a R2 substitute that was more mobile (faster = more exciting).

I think we have a winner.
I hear that U-Wing DSF Generators are the best in the galaxy! _________________ *

Of course. They had 34 years to perfect DSF technology. |
Along with the Finite Probability Field and SEP Field tech. _________________ "No set of rules can cover every situation. It's expected that you will make up new rules to suit the needs of your game." - The Star Wars Roleplaying Game, 2R&E, pg. 69, WEG, 1996.

I guess we'll have to watch the movie and find out.
