I've had this idea for a long while, and I'm hoping that maybe getting some artwork will jump-start it. I am rather ambivalent when it comes to crossovers; I don't mind them, but it is rare to find one that is done well. In this case, I'm looking to make a TIE Walker, using the TIE cockpit grafted onto Zentraedi battle pods from Robotech. The background is that this is Seinar's entry into the Compact Assault Vehicle market, with a single vehicle turning one lone trooper into a potent force on the ground.

I'd do it myself, but photoshop is outside of my realm of expertise, so if anyone is interested, please say so.

Can't help on the art front, I'm afraid.

An interesting idea. If nothing else, it seems to make a little more sense than making a TIE-hull tank.

But how exactly would it be different from a AT-ST?

Well, the primary difference would be the crew size (1 instead of 2). The other would be the market; where the AT-ST is designed for patrolling and infantry support, this Walker series would be a more versatile version of the Compact Assault Vehicle, allowing small numbers of troops to exercise control over an area greatly out of proportion to their numerical strength.

Out of curiosity, are you figuring a full-size TIE ball, or a smaller, but otherwise identical design?

Full size. The idea is that is a Seinar product line using the same ball cockpit as the TIE.

How would the legs be attached? Directly to the ball, like at the points the radiator panels normally attach? Or would there be some additional structure connecting the legs, with the ball mounted on top or in front of it?

The former would be probably easier to do, but would penalize the possible fire arc for the body.

I'm assuming the weapons are also TIE-standard in placement and type?

I'm thinking the latter, but with multi-axis swivel, so it can tilt up and down as well. In addition to the increased visibility, there is the psychological aspect of being chased by a giant eye on legs...

Still not quite decided on the weapons. I think chin blasters like those on the TIE would be standard, with a heavy weapons pedestal mounted above and behind the cockpit. There is also the possibility of modular weapon pods in place of the wing mounts.

A couple other features:

The hatch is in the bottom of the cockpit, so that to enter and exit the Walker, it squats in place and the chair lowers out of the cockpit down to near ground level.

Possibly including a small repulsorlift generator that could allow the walker to jump short distances, air deploy or drop from great heights, and assist in stabilizing the walker against loss of balance.

So, most basically (as the proportions are clearly off), something like this abomination?

Razz Sorry, this barf-tastic cludge is the best I can do. Embarassed

Ok, the damn thing wouldn't leave me alone untill I made another attempt. This time much closer to crmcneill's desired description.

Note, that having the hatch open downward, like you want, necesitates moving the weapons to the top of the ball. You effectively need to flip the ball upside down around the cockpit. This negates some of the engineering work savings from using a stock TIE ball to make those things.

But I must say, it looks kinda neat. A killer eye-ball indeed.

I somehow managed to miss some of the other aspects you were thinking of in the design. Take two...

Of everything I've seen so far, Corise's comes the closest to what I've pictured in my head (although there were some great ideas spawned from the other stuff). I'm thinking that, if I were to include the repulsorlift jump system, it would be mounted at the hip joints instead of weapons. I also wanted to include the dorsal pedestal mount found on the Zentraedi Battle Pod, allowing it to carry heavier weaponry, rocket launchers or a sensor pod.

Just an idle thought here, since you mentioned Macross mecha as inspiration...

Imagine you're on the ground, fighting Imperials. Suddenly you see a wierd fighter coming your way. It looks like some kind of TIE-Y Ugly, a TIE ball hull with a Y-Wing's engine necelles mounted in place of the normal panels. It swoops low and decelerates... And then suddenly the engines fold and swing down, and become legs, and the thing touches down, now a walker!

Fighter-walker transformers are already canon, so why not?
