But the automatic doesn't have 6-7 barrels so it is likely of lesser not equal weight. Actually, that's one of the objections to the practicality of the multibarrel weapon and one of the reasons that the Nock volley gun didn't catch on. Instead of carrying the weight of 6 extra barrels a soldier could carry a backup weapon and/or extra ammunition.
Each barrel would likely weigh about 4-5 lbs, so a 7-barreled scatter rifle would probably be in the 30-40 lb range of a light machine gun. And again, weight is not so much a factor for big aliens.

Question for the gunsmiths/gun experts: Are shotgun barrels lighter than rifle barrels? I presume the rifling of the barrel increases the weight compared to an unrifled barrels.
Well, my dad's 12 gauge's barrel is heavier than my rifle barrel, but it's smaller, too. You don't see a lot of .30 caliber shotguns or 12 gauge rifles...

Initially I was not at all excited about the volley gun approach, but thinking about the kewl factor vs the impracticality, this seems best suited as a custom signature weapon for a single character (probably a villain). The distincitive multishot pattern would provide Step 1 of The Lester Dent Pulp Paper Master Fiction Plot - a different murder method for the villain to use. So this might be a kewl signature weapon for an opponent - probably an assassin or maybe a ruthless bring-'em-back-dead bounty hunter. And the villain should either have a gun rest or tripod or be a big alien, a cyborg, or wearing powered armor.
I expect to have a baddie or two shoot at my player with it, but I'm also considering giving one to the shark-like boarding team leader he works with...

Going through this thread I checked out the links and on the volley gun page I found that Henry VIII's walking stick was a combination battlemace and tri-barrelled volley gun. Something like that would be an excellent weapon for a bad guy to have.

On a side note as a GM I've always found the greatest value for customized/unique weapons in the hands of an NPC to be the amount of uncertainty it creates in the minds of the players.

A bounty hunter gesturing with his his DL-44 while he talks might be intimidating but the players all know what a DL-44 can do.

Now the same bounty hunter casually swinging around some multi-barelled custom monstrosity as he speaks is the centre of the players attention, especially if you go into some detail about what the weapon looks like and let them make rolls to give them hints on how it might work.

Whats the difference when it does 9 shots in about 1/20 of a second....

The main difference being that the Z-6 is a high tech weapon, while this is sort of a 'hillbilly' weapon...

in my experience, the more high tech in something means the more that can go wrong...

it almost seems that there is a lot of resistance to the idea of this weapon.

throughout history people have been creating multi-barrel firearms. even today people are creating them.

A Very Rare 120-Bore Six-Barrel Flintlock Box-Lock Tap-Action Pistol - 1815

Six-Barrel Revolving Percussion Rifle

Colt Defender Mk.1 - 1967

AF2011-A1 "Second Century" - Double barrel pistol

Spanish-Made 3-Barreled Pistol

TKB-059(Pribor-3B)

then i cam across this list at wikipedia. its not very long and it doesnt seem to have them all on there.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_multiple_barrel_firearms

there are plenty of strange fire arms out there and based on our own history, i dont see why some fictional character in some galaxy far far away couldnt have a 6, 7, 10, or even 20 barreled firearm

In case of a war, I'd want an M1 Garand or an M14, with a bayonet. Simple. Reliable. Accurate. Powerful. Doubles as a pointy stick.

Wild Space = Wild West as far as I'm concerned.

As a weird one-off or the fancy of some weapon smith I think its a cool idea..

Given all the systems and weird ideas floating around someone will surely wield such a weapon...
