I've made a couple of PCs who had their own personal agendas that didn't fit in with the team's mission. One was in nocturn's PbP here which I ended up dropping out of, he was from the Tapini Sector and his agenda was to prove one of the other noble houses was secretly working with the Empire. The other PC had the personal agenda of finding the woman he loved who was expecting their child the last time he saw her, so finding her would mean finding the child too. Things were kinda revealed to the rest of the team in the second episode when we ran into her and her rebel faction, now the personal agenda is to recover their son whose been taken by Vader. And hope to find her again (that doesn't look promising, the Imps were attacking when they were seperated and her faction basically bought us time to escape

His eventual plan was to be the Imperial heir, of course, but that was further off.
The character was not openly Sith, however, and was a Captain in the Imperial Navy. He had strong plans for ascension through the naval ranks up to the top.

And how did that work out?

He, uh, committed suicide Razz
We were playing an alternate "infinities" sort of timeline working through the scope of the movies. We were on Cloud City the same time Vader was setting his Luke trap. Vader was thwarting my character's efforts to accomplish his mission goals and personal goals... after a few in-game days of Vader's interference, Malice chose to confront and make his move against the Dark Lord.

It didn't turn out the way his anger had led him to believe Razz
(Same round I called on the Dark Side, so did Vader)

EDIT - the character was a lot of fun to play, and even his death was wicked fun. He never revealed his identity as a Sith to the party until the very end, and only even made use of the Force on two occasions before that, and only when the rest of the party wouldn't be able to notice. Would have been fun to rip s*** up as a force of the Dark Side, but it was much more interesting and fun to play the secret subversive force behind events than the overt destructive power he could have been.

I'd absolutely love to play him again Wink

It was a good battle. First time his lightsaber (hidden as a cane) came into the game. We made use of environment objects, and I lasted longer than I predicted... was even this >< close to actually winning...

One of my very first games, the GM decided to throw in a Boba Fett cameo, and got surprised when my character turned around and walked off. When I asked why, he said his last group of players actually tried to make a fight of it. That campaign was abruptly truncated, due to group idiocy that resulted in a total party kill. Needless to say, some NPCs are not meant to be attacked by brand-new characters.

Yep, it's best to avoid getting into fights with the main characters Razz

In my case, this wasn't the first encounter with Vader, but it was a prolonged, very frustrating encounter for the character. Everything that he needed to do to achieve his orders from the Emperor, Vader was there to prevent it.
Vader was familiar with my character, was paranoid enough to know that, in time, he would be a threat (and was right), and had no intention of allowing him to gain favour with the Emperor. My character snapping and confronting him was a calculated risk on my part, and a fury induced lapse of judgment on my character's part.

Normally, though, yeah, attacking the big name baddies in a chance encounter is just stupid.

Actually, I think that's supposed to be the ultimate goal in the game I mentioned where my character's personal mission is to now get his son back from Vader.

On Fett, I kinda look at it like this. Vader's like the boss you absolutely have to beat in order to open up Palpatine and go for him. But you might face Vader at any time and get you rear handed to you. Fett's not really a boss and you don't have to beat Fett to face Vader. But Fett's the kinda guy who if you can beat him, truely beat him, then you might be able to defeat Vader. If you can't beat Fett then you probably shouldn't try going toe to toe with Vader.

Yeah. In my experience, the appearance of a major villain NPC is usually a GM tactic to railroad the game (i.e. As you discuss the situation, the ship's sensors start making ominous noises. It's the Executor and a dozen Star Destroyers escorting her. The Jedi feels a very strong disturbance in the Force. What do you do?"

Anyone with a brain says "What's the first planet we can jump to right now?"

What gets truly terrifying is the moron who wants to stay and fight it out.

I was wondering if your characters or your player’s characters ever have any out of plot agendas. Do they have any long-term goals besides completing the current adventure plot?

Often.
One PC (a hotshot mercenary smuggler) wants to show up Platt O'Keefe.
One PC (a young Coynite noble) wants to avenge his father (who was killed by the PC's uncle), regain his rightful inheritance as head of his clan, and marry the daughter of the clan chief of an enemy clan.
One PC (a bounty hunter) wants to find the people who betrayed him and got him kicked out of the Sector Rangers.
One PC established a Jedi Lyceum and wants to live happily ever after teaching and spending time with her husband and children. (Oh, yeah like that will really happen. Twisted Evil )
Of my characters:
One wants revenge on General Hul (the military governer on Derilyn in Elrood Sector) for killing the PC's family. He managed to cut his way through Hul's Coynite bodyguards getting woundedx2 in the process. He reached Hul, only to have Hul blast him and then impale him with his own weapon. If he isn't dead, he is Incapped/Mortally Wounded and a prisoner of Hul. Not looking good for him to achieve his goal. Crying or Very sad
Another just wants bigger guns for the ship she is on (she's the gunner). They started at 4D and are now up to one 5D gun, but that is a never ending quest for perfection. Wink
Another was accused of treason on his home planet and kicked out of the royal guard. He wants to regain his honor and serve his princess openly. He also has a secret hopeless crush on the young princess, but he would never think that anything could ever come of that. Rolling Eyes

Unless you've got a majorlly generous GM who rewards like twenty to forty CPs and two to four FPs after every fight no matter how short or after every important role made outside of combat, PCs with only a very few adventures under their belt (or particulary those on their very first adventure) shouldn't be able to survive a major NPC for a little bit. Unless the GM doesn't intend for the major NPC to do more than just harass the PCs then pull back.

Though I did throw a major NPC at the folks in my game here and have them (PCs) literally helping them out without realizing they were being played. The players might have figured it out, but the PCs not only came to his rescue once, they tried rescueing him again only to learn they'd been played.

My followup character from the campaign with Darth Malice accidentally killed Luke Skywalker Razz

He was a Coruscant Guard aspiring to Imperial Guard-hood; they were transporting Luke back to Coruscant in a Force Cage for the Emperor and he was interrogating Luke. He slugged Luke in the jaw, and the wild die went, well, wild. Luke Skywalker, the menace who destroyed the Death Star (I can't recall if we prevented that or not... geez) was killed with a single fist...

The Emperor was not pleased Razz

(Added links to the character stats)

EDIT - actually, I think we did prevent the DS from being destroyed... that or the destruction was delayed just long enough that Yavin IV WAS destroyed. Luke, R2, Han and Chewie survived, but Leia, C3PO, Mon Mothma, et al., were killed on the moon. Something tells me the DS still went boom though.
