Looks like it was first mentioned in the Courtship of Princess Leia and then in the X-Wing novels.

Using RN Ship names would be a good idea, if you could find any suitable. most baddies are british actors (even in the Star Wars universe)

That's a thought too...I once named a slave vessel in one of my games after a real slave vessel, I just changed the name from English to Spanish.
