I've seen a few interpretations here that suggest you can create a character like this:

Assign 4d to Dex
Assign 2d to Blasters
Spend 1d for three specialization dice, assign all of them to blaster pistol

Result: Blaster pistol skill at 9d

As I read the rules (2E R&E, page 28,) that interpretation is incorrect:

Quote:
You can spend 1d of your character's beginning skill dice to get three specializations: add 1d to each specialization (emphasis mine.)

In the example that follows, Thannik specializes in three seperate skills (blaster pistol, Wookies, and Ghtroc freighter, adding 1d to each.)

Thoughts?

Well, that's pretty much it. You can only raise a specialization by 1D during character cration. Simple as that.

I kind of agree with both of you. My train of thought is thus: You can spend 1D to get 3 specializations, but, since the rules allow you to put up to 2D in any skill for a beginning character, you could put one of the other 7D into that specialization.

By way of example:
I'm playing Thannik, so I've spent 1D to get Blaster Pistol, Wookies, and Ghtroc Freighter as my three specializations. So I now have Blaster @ 2D, Blaster Pistol at 3D, and 4D more to spend on other skills. (2D for blaster, 1D for the specializations). I can use ONE of those remaining 4D to improve my Blaster Pistol to 4D, leaving me 3D for other things.

As for stacking all three specializations in one skill... I definitely agree that's not allowed.

Just my 2 centicreds on the issue.

There's a couple schools of thought on that. Some interpret it to be that you can put 1D per pip into a specialization, but since there's nothing that says it can't be the same specialization, it means (to them) that you could put all 3D into a single specialization.

The other school of thought is that each pip creates 1D in specialization and you choose 3 seperate specializations that you put 1D into.

The choice is yours, but realize that if you fall into the first school, you're going to have some UBER-characters at startup which can greatly unbalance your game.

but rember that
"if you over specialize, you bread in Weakness, its a Slow Death"

so your say Bounty Hunter with Dex 4D, Blasters 6D, Blasters: Blaster Pistol 9D. is going to have to be very carfull with their other 4D of Stats and 4D of Skills or they won't be able to find the Aqusisions, if they can they'll see the Bounty Hunter coming a mile off and Scarper, if they get lucky and do actualy catch them they may get Didled out of the Bounty in Fees and Charges or see the Aqusision Walk on a Bad Bust and get nothing for all their hard work.

True. There's nothing explicitly saying one can't create a one-trick pony, but they usually don't live very long.

9D blaster will not save you from the rampaging hordes of natives you just offended on a botched cultures roll. Laughing

Mech 3D
Astrogasion 4D, Space Transoprts 4D, Space Gunnery 4D

the player Mooned about wasted stat & skill dice bacause a last minunt adition decided to play a smuggler with Mech 4D and 6D in Astrogasion and Space Transports and the GM took away his Prisoner Transport bacause the GM only wanted one Non-Starfighter ship in the Party,

Or worse yet, when they are somewhere they cannot use that blaster skill. EG say they go to imperial planet Cal. The laws there prohibit ranged weapons, or the like...

With 9d in blaster there's no need to fear a rampaging horde Laughing

(depends on how big of a horde, I guess)

I never allowed a character to spend 3D specialisation in only 1 skill. I understand "plit a dice to 3 x 1D" to be different than "give 3D in an only one specialisation".
9D in blaster is too much for new character. Remember blaster are not allowed everywhere. 6D in blaster is enough.
When I look the skill of your character, I say, Munch can use blaster and fight with a space transport but that's all. Remember, in Star Wars there is not only fight. If you play a scenario where you have to do a lot of things in a city where guns are not allowed, you will find it very boring because you are completly unskilled. You should better raise social skills.
If you plan to have a ship, you'd better raise : intimidation, hide/sneak, search, street wise, con, value, bargain, starship shield, repair transport, planetary system, bureaucraty, survival, etc...

Hope it helps you

Sad thing is "Munch" (not Characters Real Name) survived the first few adventures and picked up some usefull skills from the Perception and Mecchnaical Catogories, "Munch" got the party in to much Trouble. the other players where using him as a Semi-Smart Weapon and Meat Sheild, unfortnaly "Munch" went and got himself killed in the middle of one Adventure facing down a Squad of Stormtroopers, and the rest of the party whern't able to fight their own battles let alone Munches.

Whoops. I guess even Stormtroopers hit their targets sometimes. Laughing

Sounds like a good lesson in creating balanced characters and parties to me.

Ookay. That's a great lesson in the Folly of the Frontal Assault. Kind of a minor footnote in the Charge of the Light Brigade.

So...Was it a spectacular death?
