Have either the GM or another player chosen by the leaving player do the rolls for the combat/event, and then have the character leave on some other mission until the player returns.

That or have the GM NPC the character through the rest of the adventure until the player can get back.

That depends on the adventures. It happens every once in a while, that the group accompanies one of the players on a personal mission. If the player of the Wookie would have to leave while were playing the mission to Kashyyyk to save his sister from some trando-slaver I might even end the session and recommend a DVD. On a regular evening, I'd stick to letting the character do something else, while the group remains on the adventure. If it happens in the middle of the action, I'd roll the actions for the PC and let him leave later. I have enough NPCs close to the characters to make sure they aren't totally outgunned.

For us, the game stops. It's only happened couple of times in all the years we've played.

Two of my RPGing went into the Army this year. To honour their going we fulfilled their requests and ritualistically had their characters killed off. With their consent of course.

For those who take over rolling the skills/stas etc, do you have the rolls matter? Or do you fudge things to save the missing player's character?

As often as we have pulled the "Oh BTW, you character is dead"-joke, nobody would believe me. Sad

We've always either had the character 'leave' for an extended absence, or have either myself or one of the other players take over for short periods. That's worked well so far.

I say "Potty Break" and the character is in the crapper until they come back. On a ship, if everyone dies, so does that character.

But what if they flushed themselves down the commode and out of the ship? They've got, oh, about 14 seconds until they pass out if they're out of their vac suits. Just ask NASA. They'll tell you! Razz

Thats exactly what we used to do in all our RPGs and the character never gains experience or gain wealth from the adventure.

Sure. I wouldn't award it, either. I can foresee a circumstance in which a player is out of touch for a while (out of town, serving in the military) in which case "off on another mission" could be played solo between the player and the GM, via PBeM or something, in which case XP would indeed be forthcoming.

Well if they were there, shouldn't they get CP for what they had done in the adventure. It's not like they planned to have to leave in the middle of a game. If one of our players have to leave, either another player takes over the PC or the GM does. And he gets the CPs for the part of the game he was there for.

This one definitely needs to be re-brought up.

So for all our new folk. What happens to a person's character if they have to leave the group MID session?
Does it become an NPC under the play of the DM?
Does it become an NPC under the play of another player?
Does it just go "Poof" out of existance or something else?

If one of the former ones (where someone else runs it), do they get some form of "plot immunity" in which they won't take damage or have other bad things happen to them?
