Hi guys

I just finished running my "Tatoointe-Hoth" game. It went very well! Other than it taking alot more bounty hunters to stun the players than I anticipated, things went pretty smoothly. They managed to survive some wampas and even the Icecor (thanks to some well thrown grenades and thermal detonators). Although it wasn't easy, they got through it. And now I must design the next part of the journey!!!

Thanks to everyone for their comments/help. Next thing to tackle - space combat!!!!

First of all, congratulations on a well GMed adventure. Only the first of many, I hope.

Second, space combat, good luck. 10 years playing and I still haven't managed to get it just right.

Thanks Gry. You know, behind the GM SCREEN, all of a sudden you can see the game from a whole other level. As a player, you are so focused on dice rolls. As a GM, I am paying attention to dice, but also to the people at the table - how much fun they are having, how easy/tough the mission is going for them, etc. And, since they can't see what I roll, I can really do anything I want. Did I pay attention to what I rolled vs what they rolled? Yes. Did I fudge around a bit to keep things moving in some cases, and to make things harder in others? You betcha. Whole different ballgame when you are seeing the atmosphere of the game instead of just - I hope this roll has alot of 6s!! How they are playing becomes almost as important as how they are rolling.

As for space combat - it does look hard to get right. Hopefully I don't blow them up too quickly...

Yes, GMing is indeed a most demanding task. You must be always in tune with what's happening, what's happend and what's going to happen. After GMing a long session, my brain is usually hot. GMing is a truly unique and special thing in the entertainment business, it's a lot of hard work and very demanding, and yet the greatest pleasure you get from it is from seeing that your players are enjoying the adventure, having fun and feeling challenged. It's a very altruistic thing, not something we often see in everyday life. I guess that's why RPG will never be mainstream..... people are just not good enough.

Coming from the perspective of GMing for 21 years, I can definitely say that Gry is right on the nose about the challenges and feeling of accomplishment of being a GM.

As for space combat, my suggestion is to play it loose. Ditch any ideas of running it on the table or with minis. While it can help the players visualize a little better, it can also lead to traps of bogging down the game. Keep the exciting and fast paced feel of Star Wars ship combat!

Good luck with it all, and welcome to the GM's Chair! Smile

Allow me to hop on this particular bandwagon; the advice is sage and noteworthy.

Congratulations on your survival! We knew you could do it. Wink

Welcome to the wild, wonderful world of GMing!!! 8)

Okay!

Um, first of all you could've...Um, done things differently! Yeah! that's it! And then the thing with the creatures and those other aliens...well, that could've been planned better...And...What if that Wampa just wanted some food? Or to be held? Did you ever think of that? Well, did you?

Sorry, that's about as bashy as I can get here. Laughing

Nah.. that was awful! Let me show you how it's done:

First of all, just because you ran an adventure, it doesn't give you the right to call yourself a GM! That's a title you have to EARN! Through years of painful, dedicated Gamemastering. Come back in ten years, and then you might dare to consider yourself a GM. That bit of ranting aside, an Icecor? AN ICECOR?!!! What in the devil's name is that lame creature? That's not canon! It doesn't exist! There are literally hundreds of official creatures you could have used, but NO! You had to come up with some lame-o "ice rancor". I pity your players.

See, that's more like it.

PS: Please, no one take this post seriously.

Mallcors are the best. Especially the ones you find at the food court.
