20 BEST ‘STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI’ QUOTES

Character Growth in The Last Jedi

I've had these tabs up for months and can't remember what I would going to do or say about them, so I thought I'd just share them here so I can x out of them.

Those pretty much track to the conclusions I've drawn from the film about the character arcs.

@WillTasker,

Interesting theory on the two types of fans. I think it's pretty accurate, actually. So much of the criticism I've seen of TLJ and the sequel trilogy is that it's done a disservice to "our" old heroes. I think that criticism tends to come from people who were most invested in the Heroes of Yavin and their adventures. I've read commentary from people who wished that the sequel trilogy would involve the old school heroes going on a last grand adventure where they do most of the heavy lifting and the new heroes are more like sidekicks, and only at the end would they hand things off to the new heroes, possibly dying in some heroic blaze of glory.

From my perspective, that kind of thinking was exactly why so many of the EU novels felt really, really....lame. The characters seemed to never change, there was never any real danger or threat, and they seemed to keep recycling plots with yet another superweapon or Imperial Uber-Moff or Admiral or whatever. Tim Zahn's series was awesome, and after that it went downhill fast from what I read.

The other thing I'd say is that I think I view myself much more as a fan of the "setting" rather than the specific characters. I mean, I LOVE the original characters. I grew up with them. But I've always thought that the Star Wars universe could be this amazing setting in which to tell a whole variety of stories. One of my big criticisms of Lucas' prequel trilogy was that it seemed to be uninterested in doing that. It told a highly personal and individually focused story about Anakin in a way that only tangentially interacted with the larger events of the galaxy, and it ignored a ton of events that I thought would be more important.

I discovered WEG's RPG only in the past year, year and a half or so, although I was indirectly familiar with a lot of the material for much longer (thanks to how it infiltrated so much of the material developed between 1987 and 2015). I look at a lot of this stuff as the ultimate promise of Star Wars: a whole universe of adventures just waiting, and an incredibly rich setting for potential storytelling. So, ultimately, I'm ok with moving on from our old characters if it means we get to tell more cool stories within the universe.

Wajeb, I missed these posts from a spamming spree where you posted 7 subsequent posts in this thread in a few hours!

I don't, at all. She looks like a young kid, to me. Tomboy. Not a woman. Not sexy at all.

I love her in the role. I really like the character. But I don't think that she's something to look at. Not ugly. Just not to eye-catching.

The shots of her out of costume, too, as she appears in interviews and such. Like Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift. Not sexy. None of them. Even when they're trying real hard to be sexy.

You?

I get it. You like your women more curvy. Rey is a scavenger who some days had to live with one-quarter portions so she was well cast. I still feel Daisy has her cute moments both in the films and out. I wasn't sure who Taylor Swift was and had to look her up. I would say the same for her. However I must have seen a Miley Cyrus image I burned from my memory because just reading that name initiates a "gross" reflex in my brain.

No, nothing I have seen from Daisy Ridley so far rivals Geonosis Padme or Gold Bikini Leia!

I do miss kissing in Star Wars. I am kinda disappointed by VII and VIII for not giving us many smooches. Somebody has gotta kiss Poe already!

I have come to view Rey as more or less asexual. She just doesn't seem attracted to anybody "that way." I don't think it would occur to her to dress super sexy or wear a push-up bra. She is much more of a grease-monkey; maybe her ideal date would be fixing up a speeder bike in the garage after hitting the gym (by herself).

I like all the funny faces she makes; from that goofy smile to the Force Point using RAGE Face. She is an adorable nerd when she is sitting in the Falcon at the end of FA, like "oh boy! I am Capt. Chewbacca's First Mate! hee hee."

I do like those killer shoulders and arms of hers! I mean she climbs around old ships all day then goes to town to beat people up with a stick. Good workout.

Huh...y'know....she sounds kinda perfect all of a sudden.

Me too. I think she's cute as a bug and perfect for the role. She just doesn't strike me as sexy.

I think Daisy Ridley is absolutely beautiful. I don't think of her in sexualized terms, because she has a very young look to her (and, by implication, that's CREEPY), but I think she's gorgeous in a kind of platonic, hands-off sense. Not "pretty like a picture," mind you. That's different. But more like "I just...don't think of you that way. But yes, you are objectively beautiful."

Could she be sexy? I dunno. Maybe. Probably, sure. But probably more based on personality and if I got to know her (which, you know, I totally have the opportunity to do but am just sooooo busy right now and all...).

I dunno. I think I'd feel more fatherly towards her, or as if I'd want her as a cool younger friend whom I respected, and whom I hoped would find someone who makes her happy. So, no, not "sexy," but yes, pretty.

Such spunk.

She is perfect for this role which she doesn't need to be sexy for.

For the record, Daisy Ridley is 26. She had already turned 22 before she started filming TFA. Rey is 19 in TFA and TLJ, and I don't think Daisy looks any younger than that. So there wouldn't be anything creepy about an adult being sexually attracted to her. But I am technically old enough to be her father so I get that reaction.

Here's something that doesn't make sense to me.

The Fulminatrix is a dreadnought that is over three times the size of the new star destroyers. The new star destroyers, like the Finalizer, have 1500 turbo lasers, point-defense laser cannons, and ion cannons.

The Fulminatrix has a whopping total of 26 point-defense turbo laser turrets, all on the dorsal side of the vessel. And, it has 6 tractor beam projectors. Other than that, it's got 2 orbital bombardment weapons on the ventral side of the ship.

Hmmm.

I know that "dreadnought" means a ship that is larger than most others stacked with heavier weapons, but this really seems a poor design. Only point defense on the dorsal side of the ship? So, what's to keep attacking fighters from just attacking it from "below" it, never crossing that line that gives the dorsal weapons a clear shot?

This is, IMO, just another example of the story group pulling impressive-sounding numbers out of their pudu-holes. Nothing in the films provides verifiable evidence that the Finalizer has 1,500 cannon; it would be just as impressive (compared to, say, an ISD II) if it had 150 turbolaser cannon, which would be appropriate due to the increased size creating more room to mount more weapons.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. 90% of my problems with the new EU would be solved simply by ignoring the "information" produced extra-cinematically by the SWU story group.

Yes, that process already worked well for the EU, so it should work well for the non-film canon.

BoSS is now canon!

It is mentioned in TLJ's Incredible Cross Sections books.

And, so is the planet Celanon, for that matter (both made up for WEG's D6 game, originally).

And, The Corporate Sector is also now canon. The Canto Bite casino is on a world called Contonica, which is a desert world that has been terraformed. And, it sits in the Corporate Sector.

Does that mean I can shamelessly plug my BoSS D6 Spacers information sheet here?

And because I'm so shameless, this is what it looks like filled out with my smuggler character's information. Feel free to steal-- er, borrow-- whatever information you like for inspiration.

What is BoSS?

Bureau of Ships and Services, created by WEG for the D6 Star Wars game.

You'll find it in books like Platt's Starship Guide, Pirates & Privateers, and several other WEG books.
