http://www.starwars.com/news/game-of-thrones-creators-david-benioff-and-d-b-weiss-to-write-and-produce-a-new-series-of-star-wars-films

It was announced today that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, creators of the Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

Quote:
These new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson, writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Another series of films unrelated to the episodic Skywalker saga and the Johnson trilogy. A series of an unspecified number. I've never seen Game of Thrones (I don't need another franchise), but people rave about it. This makes me think that Disneyfilm realized that the chain writing method of making Episodes VII-IX was a bad call. It seems like they want to stay on the once film a year schedule and will alternate these series.

After TLJ I already had my reservations about a Rian Johnson lead trilogy. I want to keep an open mind, stay positive, and give these new SW series a chance. But I... just... have a bad feeling about this. I fear this is the beginning of the end. This popped into my head after I heard this news:

At least it isn't written by G.R.R.M.

Game of Thrones is... an interesting story about a bunch of really crappy people, and those crappy people screw over and kill all of the decent and likable characters. The show is somewhat palatable, but I barely got halfway through the 2nd books before I put it down and haven't picked it up again.

If the series of movies are written by Johnson, I'm sure that there will be a lot more of the stuff that folks weren't happy with. I just hope they won't spend too much time working on these, rather than finishing up the main storyline.

Not knowing what he's planning on doing this group of stories about, it's kind of hard to have much of an opinion whether or not they'll be good. I just hope they still feel enough like Star Wars to me.

I'm confused by this. The announcement of this thread is about another series of Star Wars films unrelated to the Johnson trilogy in the works. This series has two producers, the GoT guys. Rian Johnson will have nothing to do with this series as he already has his own trilogy.

I'm confused by this too. What do you mean by finishing up the main storyline? Episode IX? Episode IX which is already in preproduction so a little further along than these new series. Or do you mean that you think the story will not be resolved in Episode IX and it will continue? I think it is likely they will revisit the main episodic saga involving Rey a generation in the future, but they have already stated there are no current plans to continue the story beyond Episode IX. So it will be finished up before these new series come out.

Whill...

If you like low magic fantasy, Game of Thrones will flat out blow you away. It's some of the best TV ever created.

My apologies, I completely misread what you had typed. I thought they were going to be teaming up with Johnson.

That is a bit disappointing. I was hoping that Rey, Finn, and Poe would get a little more love than 3 movies.

Non-family appropriate TV. Lots of sex, murder, betrayal, and other things which have become big in media these days.

I agree, Whill. A major failing of the new trilogy is that there isn't really a chief executive who is in charge of the whole thing. Whatever failings Lucas may have had (failure to delegate script writing, for example), there was never any doubt that Star Wars was his, and that he had the final say. Disney should've picked one person, either a single director for all three trilogy movies or someone with sufficient clout to make the directors toe the line, to ride herd on the whole thing.

I want a Luke Skywalker prequel movie. But, to keep him from being too experienced and ruining ANH, I want it to be a three hour explanation of moisture farming and the Anchorhead water market.

I've never known my fantasy to be qualified by magic-level. What is D&D? High magic, right? I like Narnia, Earthsea, Harry Potter, and Middle Earth. How do those rank on the magic-level scale?

Thanks for the descriptions. I think I like my fantasy more heroic.

And like I said, no matter how good it is, I just don't need another franchise. My family got rid of cable TV last summer and I eliminated all my prior network shows (Gotham and the CW Arrowverse shows). I only replaced them with one show, Star Trek: Discovery, which has been fantastic. (Star Trek is one of my existing franchises).

I think that this would have been a good approach from the start. I didn't have many issues with the movies, but having a central approval process could have avoided some of the complaints that folks have had about the films.

You're welcome! There is sort of an eventual uptick in the heroism in the show, but it really takes 4 or 5 seasons before they really get anywhere with the "Good Guys" fighting back. That's not to say that there aren't still likable characters left in the show, but they're outnumbered by buttholes.

I really want to see Star Trek: Discovery, but I've got to wait for it to come out on Hulu or Netflix or something.

The director search for TFA took longer than expected and delayed the film. Abrams declined at first and after some other options panned out, then went back to him finally persuaded him to do it, but only for one film. It is possible that they wanted a central executive producer for the entire sequel trilogy and they just couldn't find anyone of the proper caliber willing to do that. Abrams said his reluctance to even do one film was due to being intimidated by the heavy burden of relaunching the franchise, so maybe now that the franchise is successfully relaunched, it is little easier to get people to agree to a multi-film project.

I was thinking that Leia was in RO and Solo will have his own movie, so maybe the inter-trilogy Kenobi movie will include Luke. It could be a cameo, but maybe the plot will even include Luke significantly. Maybe a young Luke is kidnapped by slavers and taken offworld, so Kenobi has to leave Tatooine to recover him. It could be so wizard!

The A Song of Ice and Fire books are really very good. Good storytelling (at least in the first three books), and VERY good worldbuilding throughout.

As for the future of Star Wars, well, Disney is cranking out three Marvel Comics movies a year, and presumably profiting. That’s exactly where this is headed.

It's totally worth the $6 a month for CBS All Access subscription (or $10 without commercials which is what I have). The very common objection I've ran into paying "extra" for this content, but most of these people are paying $100 a month for TV already. $6 or $10 on top of $100 is the breaking point? Really? And on top of Star Trek you get can stream any CBS show on demand. Of course now that we cancelled cable, we just have a few small subscriptions like CBS, Netflix and Hulu. If Disney's new streaming service is a few bucks then I'm sure I'll get that too. But actually there is no ongoing commitment for the CBS app, and all episodes of the entire series so far are available to stream on demand. You can sign-up for one week free and binge to watch the whole series.

Discovery really is boldly going where no Trek has gone before. The main protagonist goes from a First Officer who commits mutiny and later gets pulled back into Starfleet as cadet mission specialist. The show doesn't even start with the titular ship because it takes a few episodes to even get the story to that point. It's largely about a Klingon holy war against the Federation, and now we're into the Mirror Universe. The captain is gruff and may be more than he seems to be. Another main character is a non-officer. Main characters of many episodes can eventually die. It's very violent but still sci-fi doing stuff no other Trek series has. It's very dramatic with adult themes so not for kids. And there is even occasionally profanity, including even one fitting f-bomb. It's quickly becoming my favorite Star trek series. I highly recommend it. (Only minor spoilers above)

That could be awesome, especially if they go into the Wraith Squadron stuff too.

More than one Star Wars film a year?!?!

I refuse to pay for CBS All Access, in spite of being a huge Trek fan.

I understand the season finale is this Sunday, so I signed up for the 7 day freebie period. I watched four episodes last night. The show is fantastic.

I'm going to binge it, and then cancel on day 6 of my 7 day freebies.

I will say, though, that had I decided to pay for this, I'd be pissed. Every so many seconds, the damn things buffers. It's frustrating as hell.

The commercials play fine, though. No interruptions.

And, I never have a problem on Netflix.

There's some type of issue with CBS All Access that they need to get fixed.

They are definitely still working the bugs out of the CBS All Access app, but I've been lucky enough to only have had buffering on a couple episodes. I started out watching it on TV through the my son's xbox until an update one day rendered it unworkable, so now I just watch it on my computer, which is just as well because it is really too mature for my son and my wife can't stand the Klingon language. I generally watch each episode during the week after it airs, breaking up an episode into two or three lunches while my family isn't home.
