TFA wasnt awful but it was nothing new ...and throwing out little things like gravity wells made me sad.

I don't want this thread to just turn into refuting everyone's nitpicks with their low ranked films, but this TFA one is particularly odd with respect to the rankings...

Sutehp wrote:
RedKnight, where in TFA were gravity wells mentioned? I must have missed that.

I'm pretty sure Red is referencing the part where the Falcon apparently stayed in hyperspace for some of the Starkiller's gravity well. Although this never violated any prior film continuity, it is believed by some fans this contradicted conventions about hyperspace travel not being possible within gravity wells. I do believe some EU video games and stories may have featured lightspeed "collisions" with gravity wells. We have discussed this at length here before.

Now it seems clear that danger of going lightspeed within a massive object's gravity well does not actually come as much from the gravity well itself, but rather more from the danger of hitting solid objects within the gravity well (or rather objects' shadows in hyperspace). Starships have gravity well sensors that work in hyperspace to activate a failsafe hyperdrive cut-out to help avoid hitting objects. Interdictors with gravity well projectors work because of the failsafe. If a navigator wanted to slip by an interdictor they could turn off the failsafe, but of course that would put the ship at greater risk of hitting a real object.

In the WEG SW RPG 1e adventure module Battle for the Golden Sun, the Golden Sun was a Force-sensitive coral lifeform on a planet that had the characteristic of generating a false gravity well which made it appear as a giant star, and the only way to get into the star system was to deactivate the cut-out failsafe. When I saw TFA, this came into mind. Han had to deactivate the failsafe to get through the planetary shield, which put them at great risk of flying into the planet.

What's odd about this criticism of TFA which is last on Red's ranking is that the same thing happens in RO which is #1 on his list (but it just happens in the opposite direction). I just watched RO for the 5th time last night, and Cassian's U-Wing was still well within the Jedha's atmosphere (blue sky with no stars visible) when it entered hyperspace. There were even big chunks of the planet flying all around them when they made the jump to hyperspace. Red, I'm not trying to burst your bubble about RO, but it would be strange to me if the Starkiller jump bothered someone but the Jedha jump didn't. Of course, there's absolutely nothing wrong with you not liking that or your rankings. I'm just saying I would think one would be ok with both or neither.

I love both scenes. They are both very exciting and don't contradict prior film canon. While jumping to and from hyperspace within a gravity well is not impossible, perhaps there is some added complication from the gravity well itself. In game terms, it could be a higher difficulty number for these types of jumps.

I have to put Return of the Jedi first. The space battle was the best in all of the movies with the new one in Rogue is just as good but the tie goes to the runner. Jabba was a great addition to the story. I do like the ewoks even before I saw Cracked Obsessive Pop Culture Disorder "the ewoks are more terrifying then you remember" YouTube it.

1 return of the Jedi
2 rogue one
3 the empire strikes back
4 a new hope
...
Remember this is based on opinion not quality and content.

I think you and I are the only ones here that rank Jedi higher than Empire. I also love the Battle of Endor more than the Battle of Hoth. I love Jabba the Hutt, definitely one of my favorite alien characters and one of my favorite villains. As a kid I found the Ewoks comical but I've appreciated them more as an adult (I'm sure there is a nostalgia factor). Right now I'm preparing a campaign where an Ewok is the main character. And yeah that Cracked video is good.

Han jumping into a grav well THROUGH A SHIELD was...i don't know how describe it, it was cringe induceing and because there was so little about TFA that i thought was awesome (the Resistance X-wing squadron coming in over the lake being the notable exception) it ends up getting mentioned over the scene with the U-wing because i had actually forgotten about the U-wing.

I LIKE The Return of the Jedi more than The Empire Strikes Back. But I do agree the The Empire Strikes Back is the BETTER movie. While I would rank parts of some movies (the clones rescuing the jedi) that are low on then sences from movies higher on the list (the sail barge fight). Ranking my favorite parts from best to least would be all over the place. #1 is the garbage smasher sence from A NEW HOPE.

"Their shields have a fractional refresh rate. Keeps anything traveling slower than lightspeed from getting through."

I take it you're not a Star Trek fan because they have technobabble like that to contrive plot points in every episode. Hyperspace, hyperdrives and energy shield technology are all extremely unrealistic and require a significant amount of disbelief suspension in the first place, and this is just a minor added detail to all that. In relation to my previous post, the shield doesn't have mass or gravity to speak of because it is made of directed energy, so the shield itself should not have a shadow in hyperspace. Energy shields always protect physical objects such as ships and planets, so the danger of using hyperspace to bypass a shield would be in crashing into the object the shield protects, which is why attempts to do so would be extremely rare and success would be even more rare. But it's Han Solo's death movie! What the Falcon was shown to do was extremely dangerous, so shield technology continues to work as intended for almost all situations.

So I do not see why realspace shields should necessarily affect anything moving through hyperspace, but it is true that we each have our own specific tolerances for realism in this space fantasy. For example, I'm big into cosmology/astrophysics/planetology, so when I design planets and star system they have have a significant level of realism to them that most GMs don't worry about.

Late to the party here, but:

1. A New Hope
2. Rogue One / The Empire Strikes Back
(Although #2 is a virtual tie, with the films vying for position
at any given moment, Rogue One does have the slight edge.)
3. Return of the Jedi
4. Revenge of the Sith
5. The Force Awakens
6. The Phantom Menace
7. Attack of the Clones

5. Revenge of the Sith
6. Return of the Jedi

Anyone else want to share their rankings? If you already did in the thread above, do you want to update it to include TLJ like I did?

So below are the all the rankings of this thread (which started after Rogue One came out) ordered from newest to oldest. I realized that adding poll options for the #1 favorite film could become inaccurate since you can't change your vote once cast and thus could not choose a newer film (I seem to recall some people feeling TLJ was their new fave). And even if not choosing a new fave film, your fave could still change from year to year. So I closed this thread and created a new thread with a fresh poll that includes Solo:
