I was wondering about SW "telecommunications"

More specifically, how do two ships that encounter each other establish radio contact? I guess we could assume that there are general channels used for hailing, but what if several ships (+spaceports and whatever) are involved? The hailing channel (even if several) would be cluttered and no one would know who is talking to who etc.

I understand ships normally (under imperial laws) send out an ID signal, does this also somehow contain the frequency (assuming that is what is in use) that the ship communicates on?

I know these are details, which probably won't even come up... but out of pure interest, how would you/do you handle ship-to-ship or ground-to-ship communications?

Thanks Zarn

Your suggestion seems like a practicable way of handling it. Gonna go with this

Well, you could say that it is described in the BoSS code and handwave it, but one simple way of doing this would be to use frequency hopping or encryption - more specifically, use the transponder code of the ship (and whomever they're talking to - let's assume "The Tower") as the public keys of a PKI (public key infrastructure), and then go from there.

So, an "open" channel would then be wherever unencrypted communication is sent (we can probably assume at least some error checking and so on there), but if you then go to a "closed" channel, there's predefined keys you can use for at least some security.

Yes thanks Zarn. We've never really given it much thought, but using the ship's transponder frequency makes sense as an explanation. The ship would know when it specifically is being hailed and the comm operator could 'answer the call'. The ship's comm system would know when the tower (or other ship) is in range and what base frequency it uses if the ship's comm operator wanted to initiate communications first.
