4 dice times the average roll of 3.5 gives you 14.
The Wild Die increses the average roll 1 in 6 times (about 16%)

So a 4D proffessional has at least a 50% chance of beating a moderate difficulty roll unassited.

Throw in some appropritate tools, which often grant +1D and they are looking pretty competant.

Also consider that while players encounter difficult and higher difficuties on a regular basis, your average run of the mill NPC probably does not.

Soldier
DEX 2D Blaster 4D
Throw in a scope on his rifle (+1D), and a round to aim (+1D) and he can hit a difficult to hit target more often than not.

True.. To me 4d should be 'competent at their job professionals but 5-7d would be the upper end professionals.

4d has a 44.36% chance of rolling 15 or higher (without the wild dice) (575 chances out of 1296).

Still pretty good, all considering.

I'll buy that more highly skilled professionals will have more dice; perhaps 4d should read something more like "lower end of professional" instead. That way the higher level professionals, the 5d+, would be inferred (and would cost more, of course).
