one thing i have yet to see folks chime in about is the effectiveness of a firearm within its ranges.

everyone seems to think that blasters have better ranges until you actually look at them. for example the longest ranged blaster i can find is a sporting sniper blaster and most heavy repeating blasters. and that's only out to 500 meters on the long range. an m-40a5 has an effective range of 900m. the firearm equivalent of a heavy repeating blaster is probably an m-2 machine gun. and it has an effective range of 1,800m.

also, where are all the star wars blaster shotguns? closest i can find is the BlasTech Firespray DL-87 and that seems to suck...

If you look at blasters in-game (the only option), you have to compare to firearmes in-game. Check out the firearm ranges. Some weird exceptions aside they are rather modest.

If you want to represent real 'maximum' ranges you would have to add a new range beyong Long, perhaps calling it Extreme. This has been discussed in the Sniper thread.

maximum ranges: for example the 5.56x45mm round fired from the M-16A4 has a long range of roughly 550 meters. but its maximum range is rated at 3,600 meters. whereas the maximum range rating for the 7.62x51mm round is roughly 3,750 meters. and as i recall, the max range of the .50bmg is around 4.5 miles (~7,250 meters)

in my pre-army police academy firearms training/instruction i was using my own combat shotgun with a smooth bore 18" barrel and hitting 12" steel plates at 100+ meters with slugs. i was even using a glock 17 (9x19mm) and hitting those same steel plates at just over 100 meters as well, hard as heck but possible. no scopes used.

id say extreme range would be somewhere between long and maximum, but the weapon wont do too much damage at extreme range

If you go back to one of the equipment threads i made (or was it in house rules) where i show my firearms, they are comparable (if a little less) than the same ranges for blasters... that way they still are a little less.. EXCEPT for the full auto machine gun type weaponry (M2, M60 etc) and proper sniper rifles...

IIR the D6 game upped the damage for firearms but they also increased the max human attributes from 4D to 5D - so you may need higher firearm damage to counter the 5D STR humans.
