I've been getting into Google SketchUp lately, and I believe it's a perfect medium for doing 3D deckplans.

I'm looking for suggestions/requests for a good test case. I want something that already has a good 2D deckplan that I can use as a reference, at least until I get the hang of it. If everything works out, I'll start posting them for download. Of course if it turns out to be radically harder than I though, I probably won't finish, so no promises (TM).

Although the guy's deck plan's scales are off a bit, the craft should be 46.5m, he has his in the mid twenties. Maybe you can figure out where the extra 20m goes!

There's a guy on the RPF forums using Google SketchUp to completely recreate the Falcon in 3D. It's incredibly impressive, especially considering the fact that none of the official blueprints are correct if you look at the movies closely. I'd stick to something small for a first project. Colonial Chrome (formerly Stuffyards) has a lot of well-thought-out fan-created deckplans. If you're looking for something based on canon deckplans, I'd have to think/look...the only one that springs to mind is the Lantillian short hauler (from one of the Classic Campaign books). I may have a request or two if you want to go bigger...

Okay, I'm hard at work (read: playing around with) on the YV-100. I think I'll start with minimum detail and downloaded furnishings, so this one will be pretty basic and may have some anachronistic features...

8) I love deckplans. It provides a feel of actual place for the characters and appeals to my old love of mapping from the dark ages of D&D.

Here's the basic ship. I may stay satisfied with this, or I may update it later. I'd appreciate any feedback.

Okay, so this is new tech for me. What sort of program do I download to view this. I'm really interested, but I'm a bit bogged down with finals and ergo to occupied/lazy to do my own internet research on it. Smile

http://sketchup.google.com/

Here ya go Chesh, you can use the program free. They also have a pay version, I'm not sure what kind of extras are there, but $100 is $100...

Wow! It looks awesome! I approve!

Way cool. Especially after I figured out how to orbit.

Very nice...although those Star Trek controls have got to go. Razz Where did you find the 2D deckplans to base it off of, or did you make up your own?

They're from this D20 star wars guy's blog.

I found it by doing a google image search for YV-100.

Yeah... I don't know enough about texturing in SketchUp to change them yet.

BTW, Cheshire, I highly recommend the free SketchUp, but don't get the pay version. It has a few advanced modeling tools that you can find workarounds for, but the only indispensable tools are either come with the basic plugin, or are available for free download in the form of plugins.
